If there's one thing Louisiana is good at, it's throwing a party. During the summer, there is a festival somewhere in the state pretty much every weekend. Jazz Fest is the most famous, but there are many less well known small-town celebrations. Shreveport is home every Memorial Day weekend to Mudbug Madness, a four-day feast for the senses. Attendees can sample a wide variety of native cuisine and hear the best bands from around the state. There is plenty of rock, country, and blues, but cajun and zydeco are the stars of this show.
Back to the food (my favorite subject) . . . being a yankee from New York, it took me awhile to get used to the shock to the tastebuds that characterizes much of Louisiana cuisine. Now, I completely adore it. There are booths selling anything from crawfish pizza to alligator on a stick.
My daughter and I gorged on boiled crawfish, and also eggplant topped with a delicious crawfish pepper-cream sauce. Aii-eeeee!
Not pictured, but equally delicious were the fried green tomatoes and the crawfish cakes. I didn't have room for crawfish pie or the seafood taco, but maybe we'll try those tonight when we go see Wayne Toups and Zydecajun rock the house. They aren't the best band to listen to on CD, but are one of the most fun, bestest dance bands evuh, cher.
Here are a half-dozen Louisiana songs in various styles, in honor of Mudbug Madness. I've seen most of these people at various festivals over the years. All I ask is, if you find yourself playing one regularly, find a way to show the artist some love. My hope is you might find one you simply adore and become a new fan of Louisiana music :-)
