Today, Inception

You can tell this is the point in every holiday where we end up with time on our hands, can't you... staying at sister-in-law's, doing as little as possible. Today was: rejoicing in painless tooth (yay!) with coffee, more coffee, trying to find 2.4 clearance parking in Maroochydore, movie, dinner. O the strain.

Saw Inception - rather fun, actually; probably wouldn't have bothered in the normal run of things, only the in-laws were going, so we thought why not. TBH it was actually quite enjoyable as Hollywood goes: looked good, reasonable secondary cast, good brainless fun. Check your brain at the door first, mind, or the holes and asymmetries and DiCaprio and dud-silly will overwhelm the good-silly, which would be a shame as there's a fair bit of it. Not least a teeny tiny walk-on by Michael Caine (which I hope he was very well paid for, or did for giggles, but that's by the by). It makes the mistake of assuming that "nested stories" means "complex film", but hey. Snowboards and machine guns, what more do you want.

Verdict: the sort of story I'd quite like to have come across in a book, provided it was tidied up and thought through a little bit more and had all the tedious/pointless/shoehorned Wife Angst replaced by a more logical set of betrayal (preferably tied to male paternal-relationship) issues which actually gelled with/symmetrised the theoretical plot bit (which otherwise seems irrelevant and handwaved), and/or explored the infuriatingly thrown-away point about the team's apparent violence affecting the dreamer's subconscious . DiCaprio is his usual annoyingly unwatchable faux-intense bland woodeny self, but the rest of the cast - especially Tom Hardy, who is absolutely wonderful - more than makes up for it. And if anyone comes across any Arthur/Eames fic out there, poke it my way will you :)

Wow... first film we've seen in months :) well, first audio-visual anything, for that matter. I'd forgotten what moviegoing felt like.

Tomorrow: Eumundi Markets! and that lovely huge 2nd-hand bookshop just nearby, if I can swing it. Should be fun.
