Stimulus Package thingie: I get it. Got it. Whatever. Why, though? Our household income isn't *low*, not by any reasonable definition. Okay, I earn peanuts, but hubby doesn't. We may not be Alan Bond, but we ain't starving either. I hadn't paid much attention to the story, assuming it was all about Deserving Households... this doesn't make ( Read more... )

The Krudd money was paid on an individual basis, not household, depending on your declared income last taxation year. So you could find that you qualify for one amount, and hubby for less, depending on your individual incomes.
I don't see the point of it, really I don't, but I love my new leather briefcase, wallet and gloves, so I'm not complaining.

Oh, and as for it being economically defensible? Hmm... I guess if you rush out and spend it, then it's done its job. But if you save it, or pay it off a loan or credit card, it's a futile gesture at best on behalf of the govt.

So all the sensible things one is *supposed* to do with money are suddenly Bad? :)

Them as genuinely needs the dosh may not *have* that freedom to rebel. Although I suppose Spending On Bills is still Spending for the purposes of the exercise... Just not as much fun :(

I hear you! If someone is behind in the rent, or needing to make a credit card repayment, or even saving for a trip, they're not going to be stimulating the economy too much. I think the govt is counting on the fact that most people treat gifts and bonuses as additional opportunities to spend rather than save. When it comes to finance, most people aren't sensible in the least.

Love the icon :)

I *see*. Well *has a poke around ATO*, in that case hubby won't get one. Awww. Nice of the govt (although I'd appreciate a long hard look at childcare award rates more...)

Perhaps I can take him snowboarding with teh loot :) don't think we even *saw* the slopes last year.

Icon is from The Mighty Boosh; check out if you haven't already. Much to love there.

Yep, would have to agree with you there. I was appalled to learn how much (little) childcare workers earn, when they are in charge of the development of Actual Human Beings (or so the theory goes. I'm sure there are days when you would dispute that).

What, that we're in charge? *ducks*

I had hoped the Shock Horror ABC Closure Crisis stuff combined with the touchy-feely aspects of le rudd's lot would push the debate beyond what seems to be a systemic version of "any idiot can wipe a bum" (and, of course, the unspoken corollary that therefore only idiots do). Hell, I'd settle for some kind of nod to us being teachers, not babysitters.

Guess the Wish Fairy had her ipod on that day.

We're great fans of da Boosh. Me: series 1 more than the others, probably because it looks so gorgeously home-made and I had no idea what to expect; hubby liked series 3 best (with reservations about the Snog Scene). But they're all good. Love the radio shows too :) Bob Fossil, King of Zoo...

My son's girlfriend works at an ABC centre and I've seen the study she had to do. Hell, she needed more education than I did for my job yet she earns a whole lot less. She actually earned more in her previous job at a chicken factory, no lie. And seeing as how it's impossible to damage the psyche of a dead chicken, I really see the inequity.

I guess one bonus of the low wage (and of course I'm not saying it's fair, 'cos it aint) is that only really dedicated people are going to work in childcare. Why would you, if you can earn twice as much packing chickens, unless you really are committed to the cause of raising functioning people.

Boosh - yeppers, first season was my fav too. Vince was so sweet and naive; he seemed to get more obnoxious as the seasons progressed.
And yay! Another radio show fan! I also have the CD of their radio shows. The whole helicopter bit in the first ep had me crying with laughter.
