☣ Character

Character Name: Doctor River Song
Character Age: estimate physically late 30s, although at this point people may live faaaar longer than average humans now.
Canon + Format: Doctor Who, television show

Background: This.. is probably going to be the most confusing background in the history of backgrounds, because River Song's history is worse than the Time Traveler's Wife, which she kind of is, except with the story told from the point of view of the time traveler and she also travels through time!

At this point in the series of Doctor Who, the Doctor doesn't know much about River Song, only her death and that she knows him very well. Thus, the audience does not know much on River Song as well. We don't know what century or world she came from, whether she's human or not, and it's hinted that she's very different than what he perceives. Without including the knowledge of her future, what little is known of River Song is that she has a doctorate, is an excellent shot, and has a criminal record. We know that she was imprisoned sometime in the 51st or 52nd century in a StormCage, which is one of the most impenetrable prison systems ever built, and that she escaped. It's known that she murdered a very important man, and it is an act she feels very guilty for, even if she may or may not regret her decision.

FROM WHAT I GATHER, at some point in her early life, River Song met the Doctor, and from what I perceive, she killed him after he did a great deed and saved a great amount of people. She probably watched as he regenerated into a new person, and he told her that it was alright because he forgave her and that she was a good person who would do what is right in the future. She escaped from being caught and traveled with him for a little while, getting to know him and with him teaching her a great amount of things (including a mentioned "picnic at Asgard" so there's a good amount of relationship development) until she finally succumbs to her guilt and goes back to that time era and planet where she is caught for his murder and locked up in a StormCage.

What we know is that she was locked in a StormCage in the 51st/52nd century for the murder of a great man, and that she stayed there until she got a call from Winston Churchill in 1941, when she abruptly broke out when she realized that the Doctor needed her help. After breaking out, she managed to con a high ranking official (by poisoning him and then offering him the antidote if he gave her what she needed) into giving her a Time Manipulator so that she could travel through time to the earliest planet in existence and graffiti on the walls of the mountain in the High Gallifreyan language a message for the Doctor. And what message was that? Simply a "Hi, sweetie" so that he'd know who he had to find. After this, she goes into the future to steal a Von Gogh painting and takes it with her back to the Roman era of Earth where she convinces a troop of soldiers that she's actually Cleopatra and just waits in luxury for the Doctor to show up so she can give him the warning that Winston Churchill gave her.

Completely over the top. That's just how she works.

Her warning to him is that at some point, his TARDIS will explode and probably take out the universe, and oh by the way, she managed to find the legendary Pandorica (aka Pandora's Box) which was rumored the house the greatest warrior in existence and she's telling him where it was before anything else could find it. He goes off to investigate the Pandorica, her hallucinogenic lipstick on the Roman soldiers finally wears off and they attempt to kill her (pretty sure she orchestrated that as well just for a little more thrill), and she ends up back in the TARDIS to make sure it was okay- except somehow the TARDIS takes her to 2010 where it malfunctions and attempts to explode with her inside (hey, was it mentioned she can actually pilot the TARDIS as well? Woman of mysteries and secrets, she is). Confusing? It's supposed to be.

She manages to escape it's time loop before it blows up in the sky and spreads a crack through all of space and time that starts erasing things from existence. At this point back two thousand years ago, the Doctor's been locked up, and then released from the Pandorica (greatest warrior, haha) and manages to put his companion Amy in there instead to save her life by letting her stay there for two thousand years until she's born, and then leading her child alternate to provide the DNA necessary to heal her.

He uses her Time Manipulator to save her from the TARDIS and takes her back to 1996 to save Amy as well. During this time, a Dalek has followed them (Daleks being one of the hardest to kill species in existence, seriously, they're like Nazi cockroaches- they're emotionless, want to kill everyone not them and they always survive) and manages to fatally wound the Doctor. River buys the group time to carry him off, and then in a super kick-ass scene, makes the Dalek beg for mercy from her before she kills it. When the Doctor sacrifices himself to close the hole in the universe created by the TARDIS, no one is supposed to be able to remember him since his life would be erased from existence and the only person who would be able to remember and bring him back was Amy. Yet somehow River remembered as well, and she gave her diary (shaped like the TARDIS) to Amy on her wedding day to trigger her memory of the Doctor and bring the Doctor back into existence.

He confronts River with plenty of questions (which she gives vague and plenty sly answers) because he's only just met her a few times before while she seems to know him very well. She tells him before she disappears that soon he will understand more, and she was sorry for it because everything would change.

Much later for her, she was finally granted pardon from the StormCage (assuming she goes back) if she did one small favor for the people in charge of it... she had to figure out why the Byzantium ship crashed. So she was released on good behaviour and sneaks into the ship before it sets sail just to leave a message on the Black Box before triggering the alarm, winking at the camera, and then jumping out into the open, black space... to be caught by the Doctor, who got her message tens of thousands of years later when he visited a museum and saw the Black Box with her exact date and coordinates on it so that he could appear at that time and rescue her.

I did mention over the top.

Anyway, she doesn't reveal much to him seeing as he's from an earlier point in his life than when she met him last, but she does show off how she can pilot the TARDIS better than him and brings him and Amy to the planet where the Byzantium crashed, and shows him footage that would interest him... what she found in the cargo storage of the ship which she is convinced is the reason for the ship's crash.... footage of a statue.

Not just any statue... it was a statue of an angel, looking like it was crying. Long story short, these Angels are actually a species who are extremely dangerous and they just crash landed on a planet full of them. I won't reveal all that much about them because they're my favourite Dr. Who monsters and it's not important to River's story, anyway. Either way, it's revealed to the Doctor that she was locked up for a murder, and at the end of the case, she tells him that she will see him again... when the Pandorica opens (which was what just happened, for her). Seeing as the entire team of investigators died, she's led back in handcuffs to be judged whether she should be released or not.

More, and a lot more detailed, information found here.

Canon Point: After the crash of the Byzantium ship and defeating the Angels, at which she is supposed to be escorted back to prison.

Personality: This is the part I can provide! River is an extremely mysterious woman, and she's damned proud of that mystery. She understands to the nth degree just how much information she can reveal without jeopardizing the timeline, so she's very good at not only giving vague clues and hints, but also at holding secrets. Being a time traveler herself, she's also extremely flamboyant in her designs and actions. She's vandalized the oldest planet in existence just to draw the Doctor's attention, brought down a ship just so he would examine the Black Box thousands of years later and find her message, and has no problem masquerading herself as Cleopatra in front of a squadron of Roman soldiers. Heck, she had no problem blowing up a fez when she disapproved of it in the Doctor's wardrobe.

She's sassy. Almost constantly with her confident and smug smile, she is your expert con-man and houdini. Her own morals are skewed to her way, seeing as she has no problem killing or jyping the average joe in order to save the universe. This woman has her priorities straight, and she understands that doubt and hesitation would get her killed in her line of work. And what work is that? Why, whatever she wants.

And while she would be extremely good at manipulations, she prefers clear cut truths and honesty. She doesn't lie so much as evade answers, and finds the most opportune time to reap rewards. She's never locked up so much as she chooses to stay, seeing as she has an easy time breaking free from a StormCage yet stayed in there a while probably because she was working off her own guilt and hesitations.

River is a woman who is very used to evading answers and getting her way, but she grows very fond of the people she works with. Probably why she likes working alone most of the time. She's not one to get jealous of anything or anyone, or even show extreme emotions. But more than anything, she cares deeply about the Doctor, whether in a romantic or platonic way is yet to be determined, and she has information of things far beyond anyone's time. She knows Gallifreyan, which is the language of the Time Lords, knows how to pilot a TARDIS, knows exactly how to draw attention to herself, and hides a great deal of herself.

She's got so many secrets, and the only person she can share those secrets with is the Doctor... and most of the time, he doesn't even know who she is because of their skewed timelines. We know from an episode featuring her death that she's very motherly, and if nothing else, believes in the Doctor in a way that gets her through any and all situations. She believes in herself and her own memories, and being told that her memories are fake may through her into a loop for a few minutes before she regains that belief in what she knows.

She's extremely smart with knowledge beyond this world, but she may be limited by the resources she has to work with. She can't, for instance, build her own time machine because she doesn't have the materials necessary. She may, however, eventually figure out her way around resources to build some pretty damned impressive stuff- mostly weapons, that may combat monsters or stem radiation effects for much longer.

Appearance: Curly brown (blonde when she wants it) hair, blue eyes, average height and build... there's nothing physical that stands out about River Song, yet her presence in a room can't be ignored... probably the way she stands or her smug smile, but she definitely always knows something that you'll want to know. Picture reference!

Abilities: Nothing magical. She never needed it. She's physically capable, and her shenanigans can get her in and out of almost all situations.

Items/Weapons: Her hallucinogenic lipstick, her laser gun, and her blue diary.

☣ Samples

First Person Sample:
[Static and a bit of heavy breathing, before a feminine laugh is heard.]

Well now, these creatures outside our walls are a beauty, aren't they? I must admit I've never seen anything like them, even on the furthest reaches of the universe. Most animals even beginning to resemble such deformity in shape were always immediate put out of their misery before anyone could truly study how they came to being. And so resilient! I've been wanting a good fight for a while now.

[She chuckles with amusement.]

Does anyone recall the policy on bringing one of these beauties back so that I can study them in closer detail? The rules seem to have simply slipped my mind regarding them. Should I bring one back alive or in pieces?

Third Person Sample:
She frowned as the person before her prattled on about living spaces and rent, and how there was no way she could leave the city and that her memories were all lies. How droll. She was sure she would be able to leave given enough time and resources, and the apartments? Her eyes wandered the length of the walls and ground for a moment. She could stay there for a little while, just to familiarize herself with the layout of the city. Of course she'd be out in less than a month, though. By that time she ought to have procured herself a laboratory, and perhaps her own research facilities.

She wasn't stupid- this was quite the situation she was in, and it was definitely going to take her a good while to get out. In the meantime, though, there was no harm in looking around and seeing what might be of interest. Another little corner of the universe that she had yet to explore, after all.

And while she could still remember the mathematical equation of a sling-shot rocket from Mars to the Medusa Cascade, there was no way her memories were fake. It was almost laughable how little the people here knew, but she kept a smile on every time someone looked her way.

She did agree with them that it was rather generous of them to rescue her from whatever radiated wasteland she had been found in, and she wasn't against giving the people here just a little help. Obviously, they weren't that significant in Earth's history- either that, or she had fallen into an alternate universe. Either way, that meant she wouldn't be changing the future, and this could be...

She thought about it, ignoring the man talking to her.

This could be her little corner of the universe. Hers to change and mold. To unwind and relax. Once she found a way out, she could come back at anytime... oh, this was better than pretending to be Cleopatra! Her own little home rather than traveling around everywhere, saving the universe. Maybe she would even be able to send the Doctor and year and address the next time she wanted to see him.

Her frown dissolved into a smile at the thought, and she finally interrupted the man speaking to her. "Excuse me. You wouldn't happen to have a list of residences for sale in town, would you? Since you're so adamant about newcomers not staying here any longer than they have to."

A house of her own. How exciting!
