By chance, I was at the Albany Target with Terry and her housemate Hayden last night. And we wandered over to the toy section. Many interesting toys. Moderate number of military-themed toys. But no toy soldiers, no toy artillery, and no tanks.
It made me sad. When I was a kid, I loved toy soldiers. I had something like 200 of them, organized into model battalions, regiments, and even divisions. (1 Marine, 2 infantry/mech, 1 air-landing, if I remember right, each with integrated artillery elements).
I would engage them in pretend military operations around the house. I took this very seriously, with written operational orders to them ("commence glider landings in the living room at 6:00, seize the port facilities and hold perimeter while the armored units come ashore"). I would even encrypt these sometimes, and leave them hidden around the house.
I had a sort of odd childhood.
