intro to co-op

LGBT Cooperative

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Cooperative is Yale's full service undergraduate queer organization. Membership is open to the entire Yale community. The Co-op serves to foster community between LGBTQ identified people and their allies at Yale. The Co-op is based at the Queer Resource Center at 305 Crown St.. Meetings are Monday nights at 9pm. The Co-op represents the community at Bulldog Days and the extracurricular bazaar, and organizes events such as Coming Out Day, Pride Week, The Glam Jam (our student drag competition) and the notorious schoolwide Co-op Dances in the Fall and Spring. In addition, the Co-op serves as the umbrella group for most other undergraduate LGBTQ related groups on campus, and provides funding and support for each group. Co-op actions include film festivals, speakers series, and activist campaigns. The Co-op's ongoing mission is to make Yale a safe, accepting, fun place to be queer.

The Co-op's Mission Statement

The Co-op works to foster a sense of community among all queer & LGBT identified people at Yale. We serve as a media and administrative representative of the LGBT & queer community. We serve a social function, working to provide safe spaces and meeting opportunities for queer & LGBT students. We serve a political function, fighting to change policies and beliefs, at Yale and elsewhere, that are damaging to queer & LGBT people. Because we believe that all systems of oppression are interdependent, we understand ourselves as a part of greater social justice movements. Our goals are to be inclusive, to be active, to be visible, and to be the coolest student group on campus.

The Co-op seeks to represent fully the diversity of the queer & LGBT community. We strive in all our actions to express this diversity. We aim for a diverse membership and a diverse leadership. We strive to function as our name implies, cooperatively, with each member, each coordinator, and each Member group contributing to the organization and being supported in turn.

We act on two fronts: first, as a Co-op, a unified voice taking action; second, as a multitude of different voices, of discussion groups and of individuals. We may act across the campus as one, or we may act as autonomous individuals or groups. However, we remain one community bound by ties of history.

Umbrella Groups:

Social:

GaYalies

GaYalies is a social group for gay, bisexual, queer and questioning men. Our
purpose is to encourage a sense of community among the gay population
at Yale, while also hosting fun and provocative events that facilitate
interaction and dialogue among many different groups on campus.
GaYalies is facilitated by undergraduates and is open to all members of
the Yale community, including undergraduates, graduate and professional
school students, faculty, and staff.

Ya!Lesbians - Queer Women at Yale

Ya!Lesbians is a primarily undergraduate social group for lesbian, bisexual, queer and questioning women. The group hosts parties, happy hours, pre-Co-op Dance mixers, and movie nights. Queer Women at Yale is a group for all LGBTQ identified women and their allies throughout the university. It operates through a community email list, where members can plan parties, have discussions, announce events, and otherwise communicate to Queer Women at Yale.

Community/Support:

Prism

PRISM, an independent organization since 1995, was founded by queer students of color and friends as a space for discussion of queer issues and people of color issues, and in order to work on multi-issue politics. PRISM meets weekly and is facilitated by undergraduates.

Not Straight Frosh

Not Straight Frosh (NSF) is a confidential frosh-run, frosh-only discussion group. Whether you've been out for ages, or are just curious about alternative sexuality, this is the place for you. Not Straight frosh fosters friendship between queer and questioning first years, as well as smoothes the transition into being queer at Yale.

Political/Activist:

TransAction

QPAC

Queer Straight Alliance

The QSA (Queer/Straight Alliance) was founded in the fall of 1999 to provide the opportunity for all Yalies, straight and queer, to work together for LBGT equality without any assumptions about their own sexual orientation. The QSA focuses on education, action, and discussion about LBGT issues, both at Yale and at in the New Haven community. Activities include organizing panels and workshops in local high schools about queer issues, helping to start gay-straight alliances in local schools, and campus-wide political action to increase acceptance of the LBGT community at Yale.

Queer Resource Center Mission Statement

The Queer Resource Center (QRC) is a student-run safe space for the LGBTQ community on Yale's campus. The QRC's mission is to promote the health and well-being of LGBTQQ students, faculty and staff at Yale University. The QRC provides resources such as a queer library with DVDs and magazines, and the Co-op's own archive. Peer listeners staff the QRC and are available to talk to anyone interested in issues of sexuality and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer and Questioning life. The QRC functions as a community space, hosting meetings of the LGBT Cooperative and umbrella groups, and seeks to build a stronger, happier LGBTQ community at Yale.
