#21. Daring Barbara...

I never understood it. Her need for more…everything. She told me over and over that it had nothing to do with me, or how we raised her. But I never quite believed it.

It started with the dark circles under her eyes. Oh, she told me it was late night study sessions and insomnia. I didn’t believe the excuse, but gave her the benefit of the doubt. It wasn’t possible that my dear Barbara would lie to me. Was it?

Then the bruises began appearing, along with other minor injuries. She blamed them on her gymnastics training. I honestly didn’t believe that the training she’d been involved in for so many years was suddenly producing such injuries.

She’d left me no choice but to begin imposing rules, restrictions, curfews. It hurt to do it. It hurt even more to see her blatant disregard of it all. And without any sort of explanation.

It wasn’t until she lay in the hospital, after that bastard had shot and nearly killed her, that she finally admitted to her crime fighting exploits. Her regret at the loss of everything she’d been able to do was palpable and devastating.
