Adventures in Clamming...

May 19, 2014 12:35

So on Saturday, Amy and I went to the Twin Harbors Beach State Park to go razor clamming again. Below is the info from my paper journal write-up about it, plus some of the pictures from the trip. There were 37 total pictures taken, which can be found in this album, if you want to peruse them all. I've made a couple modifications to the way this entry looks from what I'd put in the paper journal, for stylistic reasons.

So we headed to Westport again today. I was up by 0430 to shower and get ready. We were on the road by 0547, only 2 minutes past the late end of our departure time. On the trip out, we saw a bald eagle and hit a few sprinkles. We were at the beach by 0800 and it was gorgeous! The tide was already pretty far out, and we still had an hour to go.

To say that the clams were showing sign would be a gross understatement. We ended up getting both of our limits within about an hour's time total. We were only on the beach for about an hour and 45 minutes total, and we dawdled and helped a trio of older guys learn now to clam. Hell, we gave them a few of our extra clams! In fact, we had our limits and still had a good 50 yards before we'd hit the water.

I dug up 2 clams, too, #27 and #30 respectively. The first Amy told me to do, so I could try it out. I got the little shit, but thankfully it was shallow. The second one I got because Amy had started ti dig, then went to explain how to do stiff with those 3 older guys, so I finished digging it out myself.

We went down by the water, and Amy decided to dig out a clam entirely by hand! She managed to blood herself decently in the process.

I saw a couple dead crabs in the water, so I took pictures of them. LOL! Actually I took about 37 pictures all day. Nice! So we eventually got back to the car and headed for the south entrance to leave, laughing about how the day had gone so far. Like my feet were only wet because I had to go to the water and get them wet. LOL!

Then we saw the baby harbor seal on the beach near-ish to that southern entrance. There were signs up to help protect him. Of course, I got out to take pictures of him. I wanted to pet him SO badly, but I was good. He was tiny, maybe 2 weeks old tops, and playing with a sign that warned people to keep away. He was adorable!

We left then to go to Brady's Oysters. I got more postcards, Amy bought some yearling oysters to eat later, then we got our oyster shooters again. Only we'd left our shot glasses at home. OOPS! After Brady's, I saw a pair of bald eagles eating along the tidal flats to the eastern side of the bridge there. We then hit Westport Winery where we tried a red wine, but I've forgotten which one atm, then Amy got another bottle of the moscato we all love.

Then we hit Vance Creek Pond #2 in Elma so Amy could try some trout fishing. I pussied out of sitting out in the rain, so stayed in the car and started crocheting a new pouch design while listening to some music. Amy didn't have something right, so stopped after like 45 minutes or so.

We continued home with few distractions and no issues. We FINALLY hit the taco truck by Shelton that she always wants to hit, getting a pork quesadilla and beef tacos. The salads included had chopped fresh jalapenos, membranes & seeds included, so they were quite spicy. I was the only one in the house who'd eat them. LOL!

We got home by like 1400 or so, and the rest of the night was spent being lazy. LOL! SUCH an awesome day!
