You Are All I See
Active Child
2011

You need not believe in the afterlife to hear heaven opening its gates in the opening minutes of You Are All I See, the debut album by multi-instrumentalist Patrick Grossi, aka Active Child. Harp glissandi crisscross and settle into flickering constellations; a billowing cloud of synth tones floats by; and then Grossi’s multi-tracked falsetto voice rings through like a choir of angels, singing “If you think you’re ready / I will lead you now / To a field where it’s buried / Somewhere underground.” That line suggests the sense of discovery that is Active Child’s stock-in-trade. You Are All I See sounds like a brave new musical world, where windswept electronica, sensual R&B, and the music of the spheres coexist in a harmonious continuum. There is simply nothing quite like it.

Grossi was a choirboy when he was younger, and without a doubt there are traces of Renaissance church choral music in his pure-tone falsetto. Many of these songs have a feel of holiness-the buzzing analog synths of “See Thru Eyes” might as well be aural manifestations of the shimmering patterns of light that flow through the church’s stained glass windows. Countering the sanctified air is Active Child’s fascination with earthy hip-hop beats. Grossi and producer Ariel Rechtshaid ground “Playing House” in a sinister beat, and the guest verse from Tom Krell of How to Dress Well (sample lyric: “I’m tired of being just Mr. Anybody / So baby come with me, let’s just make a body”) is anything but pious.

The production on You Are All I See does more than just provide a backing for Grossi’s crystalline voice and harp playing. It explores new worlds out of analog synths and sequencers, excavating subterranean cave systems (the eerie “Way Too Fast”) and channeling electrical currents into humongous coral reefs of sound (the climactic instrumental “Ivy”). There is no separating Grossi from his surroundings though. The album couches a staggering voice in a mesmeric production, and each side stokes the other to creative peaks, over and over again. This record is creative enough to become your world for its duration. You Are All I See, indeed.

Discover Opposing Viewpoints
Sagittarius Daily Horoscope

You might be more tolerant of others’ points of view, which may make you more receptive to understanding both sides of an issue today. Your ability to see that there is something beyond your own beliefs could serve as a catalyst for transformation, since you could find that by letting go of your views, you become open to a new and surprising world. Perhaps today you can try learning about something that is completely different and new for you, withholding judgment and simply accepting this new thing as it is. Reading or listening to someone who has opposing views may be one way you can gain different insights into an issue or ideology. By becoming aware of the variety of ideas that exist, you might realize that your own views can be limiting unless you make a point to become more amenable to learning new things.

Opening ourselves up to new ideas helps us develop a more holistic worldview. Unless we learn about opposing viewpoints or ideas that may seem uncomfortable to us, we will remain mired in our state of unawareness. Seeing that there are different sides to an issue, or that there are numerous belief systems that exist in the world, allows us to question the ideas that we have been brought up with, and we strengthen our ability to understand our lives as a result. By being critical about things without judging them today, you will experience the transformative effects of discovering new ideas and break down the barriers you place around yourself .

Changing Roles
As We Ebb and Flow through Life

by Madisyn Taylor

We all change throughout life trying new and different things, but the core of who we really are remains the same.

As we bob and weave with the ebb and flow of life our roles change, but our true self remains constant. As spiritual beings having a human experience, we go through many aspects of humanity in one lifetime. Living in the material world of opposites, labels, and classifications, we often identify ourselves by the roles we play, forgetting that these aspects shift and change throughout our lives. But when we anchor ourselves in the truth of our being, that core of spirit within us, we can choose to embrace the new roles as they come, knowing that they give us fresh perspective on life and a greater understanding of the lives of others.

As children, we anticipated role changes eagerly in our rush to grow up. Though fairy tales led us to believe that “happily ever after” was a final destination, the truth is that life is a series of destinations, mere stops on a long journey filled with differing terrain. We may need to move through a feeling of resistance as we shift from spouse to parent, leader to subordinate, caregiver to receiver, or even local to newcomer. It can be helpful to bid a fond farewell to the role that we are leaving before we welcome the new. This is the purpose of ceremonies in cultures throughout the world and across time. We can choose from any in existence or create our own to help us celebrate our life shifts and embrace our new adventures.

Like actors on the stage of the world, our different roles are just costumes that we inhabit and then shed. Each role we play gives us another perspective through which to understand ourselves and the nature of the universe. When we take a moment to see that each change can be an adventure, a celebration, and a chance to play a new part, we may even be able to recapture the joyful anticipation of our youth as we transition from one role to the next.

In this transcribed excerpt from the workshop, Williamson talks about how she came across A Course in Miracles, and the essence of what it's all about. The Course does not aim at teaching the meaning of love, for that is beyond what can be taught. It does aim however at removing the blocks to the awareness of love's presence, which is your natural inheritance. The opposite of love is fear, but what is all encompassing can have no opp! osite. This course can therefore be summed up very simply in this way: Nothing real can be threatened. Nothing unreal exists. Herein lies the peace of God.
