Moro No Brasil
Various Artists
2002
In Brazil, folk music is dance music. A broad range of feelings can be conveyed through its many forms, but almost invariably it is a music that wants you to work out these feelings in motion. In the 2002 documentary Moro No Brasil (The Sounds of Brazil), Finnish folk aficionado Mika Kaurismaki travels 2,500 miles across the country, visiting remote villages and urban centers in search of a music forged by indigenous tribes, African slaves, and Portuguese émigrés. The soundtrack offers highlights of his findings in 21 songs. Contributors range from previously unrecorded street buskers to celebrated Samba star Seu Jorge. Every track feels like a celebration.
One of the many things Moro No Brasil offers is a solid hour of virtually uninterrupted upbeat rhythmic percussion. In Grupo Cultural Bagunçaço’s “Ritmos Do Bagunçaço’s,” you’ll hear the unfettered drumming of a street march. In Zé Neguinho do Coco and Silvério Pessoa’s “Pau de Quiri,” you’ll hear furious hand drumming intensify in speed and volume behind raucous choruses. In the same performers’ “Voar no Baloa,” you’ll hear the gypsyish sounds of the tambourine behind a haunting chant.
Moro No Brasil is far more, however, than a survey of percussion. Accordion leads the way on Jacinto Silva and Silvério Pessoa’s “Carreiro Novo.” Fiddle trips out the melodies on Antônio and Gabriel Nôbrega’s “Corisco,” and Brazil’s characteristic guitar style with its thick twanging chords is on display in Gabriel Moura and Seu Jorge’s “Brasis.” You’ll hear the folk roots of Brazil’s significant contributions to jazz on tracks like Velha Guarda Da Mangueira’s “Alvorado,” which conjures twirling skirts and clicking high heels in response to guitar, shakers, and a voice that strains to keep pace with the vigorous tempo, and to be heard over revelry. You’ll also hear unmistakable elements of funk and dancehall in Margareth Menezes’s “Alegria da Cidade” with its grooving guitar, prominent bass line, and horn section. Ivo Meirelles and Funk ’n’ Lata go as far as to quote James Brown in their spicy “Potpourri” jam. You can hear any number of exciting cross-cultural influen! ces and indigenous treasures on Moro No Brasil. What you can’t do is sit still while listening.

Focusing on the Soul
Sagittarius Daily Horoscope
You may feel moody and anxious today and be prone to emotional reactivity. Because you are likely feeling overwrought by worldly pressures, you may wish to stay home or to work alone. You can ease the compulsiveness and inner tension you feel by giving in to your cravings for solitude. If possible, consider putting aside your day's agenda and using your newfound free time to analyze these chaotic thoughts and feelings. Should your duties interfere with your reflection, working by yourself may afford you an opportunity to listen to your inner voice in order to discover what you need to do to regain your emotional equilibrium. Creative pursuits such as writing, sketching, singing, or playing music may give you an effective emotional outlet with which to express your feelings today.
Spending time alone, away from the rigors and distractions of modern life, can help you recapture the train of your thoughts and connect with all that is important to you. Frequently, we give too much consideration to worldly matters and not enough to our inner selves. Solitude envelopes you in peace and gives you an opportunity to listen to the guidance of your true voice. You'll regain your clarity of thought as the mental tension in your mind melts away. Alone, you can focus wholeheartedly on your own needs and engage in only those activities that nourish your soul. And you can rejuvenate your body and mind to prepare yourself for a more relaxed tomorrow. The time you spend alone today will allow you to reconnect with your inner self and nourish your soul.

Essential Authenticity
Revealing Your True Self
Our true selves exist whether we acknowledge them or not, often buried under fears and learned behavior.
Identity is an elusive concept. We feel we must define ourselves using a relatively small selection of roles and conscious character traits, even if none accurately represents our notion of "self." The confusion surrounding our true natures is further compounded by the fact that society regularly asks us to suppress so much of our emotional, intellectual, and spiritual vibrancy. Yet we are, in truth, beings of light-pure energy inhabiting physical bodies, striving for enlightenment while living earthly lives. Our true selves exist whether we acknowledge them or not, often buried under fears and learned behavior. When we recognize our power, our luminosity, and our divinity, we cannot help but live authentic lives of appreciation, potential, fulfillment, and grace.
At birth and throughout your childhood, your thoughts and feelings were more than likely expressions of your true self. Though you may have learned quickly that to speak and act in a certain fashion would win others' approval, you understood innately that you were no ordinary being. There are many ways you can recapture the authenticity you once articulated so freely. Meditation can liberate you from the bonds of those earthly customs that compel you to downplay your uniqueness. Also, communing with nature can remind you of the special role you were meant to play in this lifetime. In order to realize your purpose, you must embrace your true self by letting your light shine forth, no matter the consequences.
Rediscovering who you are apart from your roles and traits takes time and also courage. If, like many, you have denied your authenticity for a long while, you may find it difficult to separate your true identity from the identity you have created to cope with the world around you. Once you do find this authentic self, however, you will be overcome by a wonderful sense of wholeness as you reconcile your spiritual aspect and your physical aspect, as well as your inner- and outer-world personas. As you gradually adjust to this developing unity, your role as a being of light will reveal itself to you, and you will discover that you have a marvelous destiny to fulfill.
