State of the AJ

Oct 25, 2011 09:49

So here we are, 25th October 2011, and this is quite possibly the first real content post I've made that didn't involve the monthly free tarot drawings. That's pretty fucking sad, isn't it? *sighs*

And, like all of my "State of the AJ" posts, this will be in bullet format…

Health :: Still fighting the cough from the bleurghy I got from Lorre right before I left to head home last month. But a lingering cough is nothing unusual for me when I get sick anymore. Only stuffed up a little bit, usually only when it gets cold, so that's good. I'll just be happy when the cough goes away. It's already getting rather old… Hell, it was getting old a couple days after I got sick, so…

Work :: Am currently down watching the nephew again. He's doing better in school this year, which is fantastic. He's doing more and more reading, and even asked to read me one of his Goosebumps stories out loud yesterday. Of course, I said yes! LOL! It was a cute story, and his reading is getting much better. Did you notice that I might be just a little bit proud of him? *g*

The first three internet options we looked into for me at the house here all fell through, due to a combination of reception and pricing issues. We have a couple more to check out for November. For now, I am getting by on trips to McDonald's and the local library, plus randomly catching an unsecured wifi connection at the house. It's not ideal, but it works.

The nephew and I have been sort of adopted by a local stray cat that lives in the alley behind the house. A gorgeous orange tabby cat. We think it's a girl, as I haven't seen any boy bits, nor have I seen any signs of being fixed. She's definitely imprinted on humans, and someone must be feeding her. She has a little nest under the evergreen tree in the alleyway, and we see her there every morning when I take the boy to school. She comes out to talk to us, rub up, and get pets from us. Lorre says there's enough mice in the area to feed her, even if no one else is feeding her, and she doesn't look too skinny, so that's good. She doesn't have a collar, so I'm guessing she's someone's cat that is just 100% outdoors. I only hope she'll stay warm and safe this winter. We've gotten rather attached to her already. She makes me miss my booties, too… I think that's why I've gotten a bit attached to her, to be honest, as she makes it easier for me when I miss having cats around. I'll have to remember to post up pics of them when I get home…

On Saturday, we headed over to Lincoln City for a day of fun and de-stressing. We had lunch at Mo's [yummy grilled oysters!], where we then got to see a group of harbor seals [at least 40 of them] on the island across the little channel, as well as a huge flock of pelicans, and even an otter! *squees* Then we hit my beach in Lincoln City. It was cold, and the waves were pretty high and rough, but we didn't care. We all got soaked basically to the crotch [the nephew got the first crotch shot], but having fun. I had a nice talk with the Old Man and Ariestess, among others. I haven't felt that good in a long time now. I definitely got a nice recharge, that's for sure! LOL! We also hit our favorite juju shop [Crystal Wizard], the outlet mall, and WalMart for supplies. And Lorre even stopped at Arctic Circle to get a bottle of fry sauce for the house! Woot! It was a long, fun, and very tiring day, but oh so very necessary for all of us.

I will be heading home next Tuesday, the 1st of November, after finally getting to go trick-or-treating with him for the first time on Monday night. I'm really rather stoked about going with him. I'd moved to WA when he was only 18 months old, and have never had this opportunity before, so I jumped on the chance!

Writing :: I am going crazy this month with the writing mojo! I've already got almost 26k words written in fic this month with a total of just over 32k words written overall], and there's still time left to write more. LOL! Definitely getting my writing chops in order for NaNo next month, that's for sure…

I finished and posted a Babylon 5 story last week called "Shattered Glass: A Journey" for
ladiesbigbang. That baby topped out at 15k words of fic, plus 359 words of poetry. I'm quite pleased with it, and I am absolutely in love with the complement that
jenn_calaelen made for me. It's a beautiful cross stitch sampler of the 16 tanka poems I'd written for the story. I'm already bouncy with excitement for the sampler to arrive in the mail, even though she only got it sent out yesterday. LOL!

Have also finally finished "Ghost Stories", a The Division WiP that's been languishing on my hard drive for the last 9 years. To say that I'm happy to have FINALLY finished this beast is a major understatement. LOL! It topped out at a little over 30.5k words, and will be posted by the end of the month for
thelittlebang. Am still kind of stunned that the story's finished. I keep thinking I'm going to wake up from the dream and find that it's still languishing on my hard drive. I know that not a lot of people know or read the fandom, but that's okay. I finished it for me and
shatterpath more than anything else.

Crafts :: Earlier this month,
shatterpath and I did a craft show at the Healing Hearts Psychic Fair. It was our best show yet, sales-wise. We have another show coming up the day after her birthday, and I really hope we do well at that one, too. Those two shows will probably be all we do this year, due to scheduling over the holidays and my job watching my nephew. But that's okay. Two shows is good. Will most likely need to do some product restocking after this next show, especially for the crochet and spa items. Am also planning to put some stuff up on our Etsy store when I get back home next week. Need to start using that site more to sell stuff, damn it! LOL! I'll post an announcement when I get something more up there.

Fandom :: You know, I'm kind of in a weird limbo with my fandoms this year. Lorre doesn't have any cable or anything like that, so I mostly watch movies and my series dvds when I'm down here. Then I catch up on my regular shows when I go home. The funny thing is that I don't mind it, for the most part. I do miss watching things like my cooking shows and such, but
shatterpath makes sure that I am saturated with them when I'm home. LOL!

My fannish shows right now are as follows…
  • Harry's Law :: I was worried I'd have issues with this show when I'd heard that they were getting rid of Jenna and Malcolm. But they dealt with it in a really nice way, particularly with Jenna, and it still allows me to write more Harry/Jenna femslash if I want. The new angle to the show is very interesting this second season. I'm hoping it continues to be one of my quality shows.

  • Hawaii Five-O :: For the most part, I am watching this for Grace Park. I can admit that now. I mean, I like the rest of the main cast, don't get me wrong, but she's dead sexy as Kono. I just don't have anyone to slash her with…

  • CSI: Miami :: Seriously, the only reason I'm still watching this show is because I keep hoping for some good Calleigh/Natalia interaction. I really should get back into doing some sort of episode-based fics for them, like racethewind10 used to do. It'd be nice to write for them again. Then again, having the Delko relationship shoved down my throat has been less than positive for me the last couple of seasons… That's what the OT4 is for, right? *veg*

  • NCIS :: Another show that I'm watching out of stubbornness because of beloved characters. Ziva, Abby, and Gibbs are my main pulls for this one. The recent Abby-centric ep has given me a few ideas of things I can do, but I just haven't been able to pin down the muses to work on them.

  • Private Practice :: I miss Naomi. Seriously miss her. I'd deal with having that ass Fife around if it meant I'd have Naomi back on my show. I love Addison, and I adore Addison/Sam, but I'm kind of hating the whole "Sam vs. baby" storyline that we've been fighting since the latter half of last season. She's known since the unofficial pilot eps for the series that she's not able to have kids. So WTF is all of this current crap? *sigh* Violet just needs to go away for good. I really can't fucking stand her anymore. Haven't ever really liked her all that much, but have steadily grown to loathe the character over the years. And is Shonda trying to make Charlotte/Amelia canon or something? Because, DAYUM, there is some yummy chemistry there. I just don't know if I can write it, because I don't think I can get Charlotte's voice well enough yet.

  • Criminal Minds :: I am seriously behind on this show. Like, I still haven't seen the whole Emily saga from last season yet. I've had spoilers for last season and read several fics, just haven't seen it yet. And now that she's back, I probably need to do some CBS.com mainlining or something to catch up, right? Sorry, but I'm in a serious Emily infatuation, and I think I'm FINALLY coming around to liking JJ more. Go figure. I ALWAYS get into the popular fandoms late. *sigh*

  • My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic :: I am behind on the second season only because of being in Oregon. And that's only the last ep or two. I'll mainline those when I get home. Probably Tuesday night or Wednesday, to be honest. I blame my love of this show on
    havocthecat,
    cleo, and norabombay.
    havocthecat and
cleo talked it up initially, then norabombay linked to those insane MLP:FiM vids to Weird Al songs, and that was all it took. I love me some crack, man! LOL! I am a dyed in the wool Fluttershy fan, first and foremost, though
shatterpath got me to love the Applejack/Twilight Sparkle pairing to pieces. *heh*

  • Glee :: Wow! I'm seriously not sure what's going on with this show this season. Yes, I have serious issues with a lot of the characterizations [and have since S1], but I love the music. Hate Rachel Berry with a white hot passion [and have started hating Lea Michele because of it]. Am starting to hate Quinn over the latest storyline for her. Am loving Puck like whoa over the same storyline. Glad to have Shelby back. Love Kurt, Brittany, and Santana like whoa, as always. So glad they're continuing the Tina-as-vampire bit with Figgins, and that she and Mike are still together. I have thoroughly fallen in love with Mike this season, btw. Loving the crack that is Sue Sylvester, and the fact that Becky's back as co-captain of the Cheerios. I think my infatuation with Emma is dying. I hate to say it, but I liked her better with Carl than with Will. And I'm seeing more and more just what a douchenozzle Will really is. I love Matthew Morrison, but am not so enamored of the character now.

And may I just say that, while she's a very talented singer, Lea Michele sounds like a fucking amateur next to Idina Menzel?

  • And I'm waiting for new eps of both Leverage and Rizzoli & Isles, too…

*pauses to see if she's missed anything* No, I think that's all of it for now…
