So In Love
Roberta Gambarini
2009

With her parents having met at a jazz concert, its pretty safe to say that Italian jazz songstress Robert Gambarini was destined to be a musician. Born in Turin, Italy, Gambarini was nurtured by her parents’ love of music and their records of the classics. She moved to Milan at 18 to pursue her career and her efforts were shortly rewarded after she won a radio contest that got her touring around Europe. At the age of 26, Gambarini earned a scholarship to study at the New England Conservatory and ended up finishing third in the Thelonius Monk jazz competition, behind Teri Thornton and Jane Monheit. The award was enough for her to move to New York, where she recorded her first album of jazz standards Easy to Love.

When the record was rejected by every label she submitted to, she released it on her own label Groovin’ High. The release received a Grammy nomination for Best Jazz Vocal album, among contemporaries such as Diana Krall. On her most recent release So In Love, Gambarini shows her maturation and an artist and challenges her third place award status in the Thelonius Monk competition. She covers Cole Porter multiple times on the record, kicking off with a respectful cover of "So In Love" that has the same tenderness as the original, but an added sensuality thanks to her rich alto. Supported by pianist Hank Jones, who works best with strong female vocalists, Gambarini’s golden voice takes the spotlight.

Serious as "So In Love" is, Gambarini is equally at ease with the more lighthearted tunes. On "That Old Black Magic," she emulates the talent of Ella Fitzgerald, with her voice dancing flirtatiously with the percussion and piano, and you can easily imagine her commanding the stage at a speakeasy. She keeps up the catch me if you can attitude on her rapid-fire version of "From This Moment On." She scats with ease and femininity, and Jones matches her energy with grace, spiritedly playing the piano in a friendly battle of skill that escalates into a call and response climax. With its thorough voyage through various types of jazz and Gambarini’s throaty vocals, this album is a perfect accompaniment to red wine and evening activities.

Drawing Strength from Potential
Sagittarius Daily Horoscope

Your approach to projects related to your domestic life and your outside affairs could be overly cautious today because you are likely feeling intimidated by the unknown. Opportunities that have the potential to be richly rewarding can seem to be laden with unavoidable pitfalls. Yet your assessment of the prospects the universe puts in your path may be skewed by your aversion to risk. If you focus on the possible positive outcomes rather than the hypothetical roadblocks you may or may not encounter, you will likely discover that the hazards before you become just another aspect of the goal-realization process. Today may be the day you learn to channel your feelings of prudence into a fascination with calculated risks.

We can accept risks as a natural part of our forward progression when we choose to focus on the potential gains that lie hidden in peril rather than the possibility of failure. Those individuals who give too much thought to the pitfalls they may encounter in the future are often paralyzed by fear. When we concentrate on what we wish to achieve and the means we intend to use to achieve our goals, there is little room in our psyches for apprehensions based on unknown factors. One hundred percent of our mental energy is devoted to the practical matters that are related to our ambitions, and we can draw inner strength from our visions of a successful future. When you view risks as a positive part of the goal-realization process today, you will feel comfortable throwing caution to the wind.

Clinging to the Core
When Our World Falls Apart

When it feels as if your world is falling apart, know at your core that you are a strong being of light.

There are times when our whole world seems to be falling apart around us, and we are not sure what to hold onto anymore. Sometimes our relationships crumble and sometimes it’s our physical environment. At other times, we can’t put our finger on it, but we feel as if all the walls have fallen down around us and we are standing with nothing to lean on, exposed and vulnerable. These are the times in our lives when we are given an opportunity to see where we have established our sense of identity, safety, and well-being. And while it is perfectly natural and part of our process to locate our sense of self in externals, any time those external factors shift, we have an opportunity to rediscover and move closer to our core, which is the only truly safe place to call home.

The core of our being is not affected by the shifting winds of circumstance or subject to the cycles of change that govern physical reality. It is as steady and consistent as the sun, which is why the great mystics and mystical poets often reference the sun in their odes to the self. Like the sun, there are times when our core seems to be inaccessible to us, but this is just a misperception. We know that when the sun goes behind a cloud or sets for the night, it has not disappeared but is simply temporarily out of sight. In the same way, we can trust that our inner core is always shining brightly, even when we cannot quite see it.

We can cling to this core when things around us are falling apart, knowing that an inexhaustible light shines from within ourselves. Times of external darkness can be a great gift in that they provide an opportunity to remember this inner light that shines regardless of the circumstances of our lives. When our external lives begin to come back together, we are able to lean a bit more lightly on the structures we used to call home, knowing more clearly than ever that our true home is that bright sun shining in our core.
