"Lost and Found"
By A. Magiluna Stormwriter
"Mama?"
"Yes, sweetheart?"
Magazine set aside, my attention is focused solely on my daughter as she climbs up to curl up in my lap. She wiggles around for a moment or two, but finally settles into her favorite position, head resting on my chest. The pregnancy made it difficult for the two of us to have this quiet bonding time, and we've been making up for it as much as possible ever since Michel was born. Long moments are spent in this companionable silence.
The soft brush of lips across my temple brings me out of a gentle doze some time later. It takes several bleary blinks before Rachel's amused gaze comes into focus. Her gentle hand on my shoulder keeps me in place as she settles next to me.
"I was wondering where Rose wandered off to," she whispers, fingers lightly stroking over our daughter's curls. "But I could feel that she wasn't in any danger. Dace and the twins weren't worried, so I knew I shouldn't be."
"She wandered in and just crawled right up into my lap," I reply just as softly. "The next thing I knew, you woke me up."
Rachel's lips curl up in a sheepish smile. "You know, I sat here for a good five minutes at least, once I'd found Rose, just watching you both sleep. I didn't want to disturb you and ruin the moment. I know you've missed this bonding with her."
"You're far too indulgent with us, Rachel Corrigan," I tease lightly, shifting to press a light kiss to her lips over Rose's head. "You're just a big old softie, aren't you?"
Shrugging nonchalantly, she gets up smoothly as Michel makes his presence known via the baby monitor. "What can I say? You're the best things in my life."
