"Maturity"

"Don't go too far, you two!"

"We won't, Momma!" Ella calls back, flashing us a broad grin. "Rachel's gonna show us the fireflies."

The pride at my step-daughter's maturity since Mark's death still astounds me. I never once expected to see her grow into the adult walking toward the sandboxes with Ella and Henry. That she's proven me completely wrong warms my heart.

"So how long do you think it'll take before they wear her out?"

Gazing into Kerry's amused green eyes, I can only shake my head. "You are incorrigible, Kerry Weaver."

"Takes one to know one," she quips, leaning over to rest her head on my shoulder. "I've got twenty that says she won't last an hour."

"Have you forgotten how tenacious she was when she was fighting me as a punk teenager? She's got at least two hours before they run her into the ground."

"So you're taking my bet?" Her voice has grown huskier, accompanied by a darkening of her eyes, and a shiver oozes down my spine. "We could go back to the house, make good use of the time alone…"

"And if I refuse?"

No words are spoken as she leans in further to nip at the pulse point in the base of my throat. To say my heart rate has increased from this is a gross understatement. This woman is truly going to be the death of me.

"Damned right, I am, and you'll love every second of it, too."

Arching a brow at her, I motion back toward the brownstone with one hand, dialing Rachel's cell with the other. "Rachel, hi. Listen, Kerry and I are going to head back to the house. Can you handle the kids by yourself? Great."

"You're blushing, Liz," Kerry teases as I quickly shut my phone and stuff it back into my pocket. "What did Rachel say?"

I start walking toward the house, intent on ignoring Kerry's question, but the well-placed thwack of her cane stops me. "She said to put a sock on the front doorknob if we want her to keep the kids away longer," I finally blurt out, feeling the flush of embarrassment heating my face even more. "Do you know what it's like to have your own step-daughter teasing you about your sex life?"

"It would be worse if she teased you about your lack of a sex life."

Once again, my lover has an excellent point.
