Princess Aurora is arguably the least popular Disney Princess in the official franchise, with many people criticizing her for being romantic, obedient, and too “traditional”. While many people see her as a weak character I, by stark contrast, think she’s one of the strongest characters I’ve ever seen. While it’s important to have characters as headstrong as Belle and Jasmine, it’s equally important to have a character who chooses duty over personal desire, which is precisely what Princess Aurora manifests once she finds out she isn’t, in fact, Briar Rose and her entire life has been a lie. She doesn’t blame anyone, throw a fit, or try to run away; she returns to the castle to meet the parents she just found out existed mere minutes ago, leaves the boy she loves behind (yet she’s somehow dependent on a man?), and accepted a duty she was neither prepared for or asked for.

So what happened after he climbed up the tower and rescued her?
She rescued him right back.

Original caption: The above illustration is by Jessica Ward was scanned from my copy of The Art of the Disney Princess. I love how she switched the roles of the prince and princess in Walt Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. Say what you will about Disney Princesses and their lack of feminism, but I love them. Belle will always be my favorite.

Aurora Rose walked down the aisle slowly, getting used to the weight of the armor....  Her eyes swept over everything, everywhere, pausing nowhere.  Goldem helms, intricate onyx headpieces, spiked and dangerous-looking crowns, plated metal turbans.

Finally she saw what she wanted.

She strode forward and lifted a helmet - one she knew would fit - off the top shelf.  A point came down the middle of the forehead to protect her nose - and was also vaguely reminiscent of Maleficent's headpiece.  But instead of horns, silver wings swept back over the ears.

With slow, sure movements she put it on.

It did fit.

Perfectly.

She turned around to show the others.

Phillip sucked in his breath.

"You look magnificent, Rose.  Like - like an ancient goddess of war."

"Like victory," the green one said softly.
