Digital art from Monsters University (2013) found in The Art of Monsters University
Sketch from the DVD bonus features of Monsters, Inc (2001).
I was really fascinated when I first watched the DVD bonus features of Monsters, Inc. There were a lot of sketches and concept art that I screencapped and posted on my old tumblr blog. When I wemt through my Art of Monsters University book by Chronicle Books, I realized that the skeleton drawn on the chalkboard of the digital classroom looked a lot like Sulley. And I remembered a screencap I took from the DVD of this sketch of Sulley, which was kind of like an X-ray vision. I love stuff like that. Because animators and artists need to understand the bone structure and muscle mass of their characters in order to make their movements look realistic. How Sulley carries his weight, how his fur moves as he does. How his tail helps him keep his balance as he runs. There isn't a real point to this post except for my observation that the animators found a way to encourporate a preproduction sketch from the first movie into the preproduction digital art of the second movie. It's really cool monster anatomy. Sulley is built a lot like a bear.
