The
spread from Beyond the Tiara inspired me to read this book!

Link to the audible audiobook. The audiobook wasn't bad. I have read a book with an audiobook read by
Saskia Maarleveld before.
I love the
Twisted Tales series. These books are based on the canonically animated films by
Disney Animation. Mostly they're based on the theatrically released animated film. The series is not based on the
live action installments.
I was impressed because there were some references in this book to
Ariel's Beginning, TLM 3. I hadn't expected that.
I love that these books (especially when Liz Braswell authors them), are an extension of the canon set out in the animated films. There is very little (practically none) retconning.
I also love that there are intertextual references that are not always historically based, for us adult disney geeks! Jona, a seagull, is named after "Jonathan Livingston" which is a reference to
Richard Bach's book.
There are also some cute quotes.
"She loves all the...royal things, you know. Princess things. Gowns, teacups, golden spoons." page 195
I also really love that there are references to the original Hans Christen Anderson fairytale.
"Sometimes after a day in the stacked-heel booties she wore it felt like knives were impaling her through her soles, like obscene torture out of some fairytale." page 292
I also love that reading these books, you can envision the animated scene in your mind.
"She entered the town late the next morning, and kept her headcarf close around her.
The market was different today - different vendors selling entirely different wares. In Atlantica it was always the same people sellingt he same things to the same people, only a slight variation with the seasons. It's Red Kelp Festival Day! Oh, it's the Incredibly Rare and Beautiful Blue-Tipped Anemone Spawning Day! Oh! It's that guy who makes those little wood carvings of the gods out of shipwreck material!...She owned at least a dozen of them." - page 306
I loved this part about Ariel in the marketplace. It just made me feel so happy. My little Disney Geek heart was overflowing!
more disneygirl89 TLM graphics in this post. more icons by coffeecup_icons The following bit got me thinking about the
My Side of the Story Ariel/Ursula book:
"Her plans were like a little girl's fantasy, all sketched out in a book titled something like Princess Vanessa's Plan to Conquer the Known World, in curlicue letters, with hearts dotting the Is." -page 352
That part just made me feel so happy. Ursula is such a fun villain, and I could tell that Liz Braswell had a lot of fun writing her.
Ariel as a powerful, but mute, queen was really cool. It didn't really make sense though, that all of her sisters would pass being queen. I really would have thought that Attina would have wanted the job.
Here is the cover of the graphic novel!
Available for preorder! I love this illustration! So beautiful. Ariel is a gorgeous queen. Fiery and powerful.
I also loved this book because there was a happy ending!
Spoiler: Ariel defeated Ursula!
In the
Beauty and the Beast installment, there was a lukewarm ending. So I was worried it would happen again, but it definitely did not!
Anyhow I just had so much fun with this book! I'd definitely reccommend it to you to read! But get it from your library! The book was published in 2019, so it should be there! I've just put a hold on
the Tiana installment! This series is a lot of fun. Makes my adult Disney Geek heart happy!
