Jasmine's Outfits
I was reading A Secret Princess, borrowed from my local library. And I guess I felt inspired to put this post together. I really thought of this quote, and the quote in the title of this post (in the intro song to Disney's Cinderella (1950). And then I wanted to include the various Disney Princess "dress me up" gifsets, as a spinoff to this post. I don't care what anybody says. I'm sure the book A Little Princess inspired the Disney Princess franchise in some way. If you think about it, for the original trio (Snow White, Cinderella, and Aurora), rags and "peasant dresses" had a very symbolic role in each of their respective films. The whole concept of a princess being disguised in rags because her stepmother was jealous and reduced the princess to servant status (Snow White and Cinderella) or that the princess was hunted by an evil fairy (Aurora's story) is very pivotal to fairytales and fantasy. Whereas in the Disney Princess films closer to the Renaissance, peasant outfits have a role that is more specific to the issues each individual princess faces. Ariel wears a "sail dress" in order to cover her naked body after Ursula gives her human legs. Jasmine disguises herself in unremarkable material so that she can see the world outside the palace without being noticed. Belle has a simple blue and white dress with an apron and ballet flats, more suited to her simple life in the little French town. I am fascinated by the Disney Princesses and their "humble" outfits. I'll let you know how the book goes. So far, I don't like that the authors (Melissa de la Cruz and Margaret Stohl) change the canon of A Little Princess and The Secret Garden. Published fanfiction is great, but please don't change the canon that the origianal authors created.
