The lyrics to the deleted song Cinderella would’ve sung in this scene, entitled The Dress That My Mother Wore. This song was originally supposed to delve more into the backstory of Cinderella’s pink dress, as well as some of the history and emotional involvement she still had with her parents. It’s very harrowing that they cut this, especially since a predisposed view to how much the dress meant to Cinderella would’ve made the already scorching scene of when her stepsisters tear it to rags that much more poignant and alive onscreen.
You know what’s truly sickening about this particular scene? This dress (before the mice gave it a makeover) originally belonged to her deceased mother. Cinderella hardly has any personal possessions due to the greed of her stepmother and stepsisters. So, I assume that this dress meant quite a lot to her as a reminder of a simpler and happier time in her life. It symbolizes a fresh start and a chance at a better life for her. It must have been traumatizing to see her dreams just destroyed, literally ripped from her, torn to shreds. Not to mention, they verbally abuse her calling her a “thief” and a “kitchen wench”. In the end when Cinderella is standing alone in rags, it’s animated so beautifully because you can feel this weight and this sense of hopelessness. Cinderella’s a girl who even said herself that no one could take away her dreams. But in this scene, you can see she’s giving up.
That’s why it is so important that Cinderella gets her happily ever after. Her Fairy Godmother is a symbol of faith and perseverance in hard times. After all, “Even miracles take a little time.”

This masterfully executed shot tells us who came to the ball to meet the prince, and who came just to enjoy herself.
Throughout the years, a lot of feminist critiques have panned Cinderella, including Emma Watson most recently, claiming that she’s a subservient doormat who lacks agency and waits for a man to save her throughout the course of her film. This criticism is null and void because Cinderella never once mentions wanting to find romantic love or wanting to meet the prince before attending the ball. This theory circulating, that many people have mindlessly reiterated, speculating that Cinderella planned to go to the ball to be saved by the prince is completely unfounded on the grounds that Cinderella ended up leaving the ball at midnight without so much as giving her name and, on screen, she verbally indicates that she had no idea the man she danced with the night prior was the prince at least three times. Ilene Woods, the original voice actress of Cinderella who had a lot of input into the development of the character, stated, “[Cinderella] was kind of spunky. She accepted life as it was and went after things she wanted. I think she was a spirited girl. I don’t think she needed the prince. I think she wanted to go to the ball and that was it at the moment. Then the prince wanted her and vice versa.”
Anyone who says Cindy does not have agency has NOT WATCHED OR FORGOTTEN THE MOVIE.
As I’ve said before, Cindy just wanted to go to the party, to have some fun FOR ONCE. She didn’t go looking for love, she would have been happy to chat to a guard, an elderly noble matron, some random servant or another young girl all night! She just wanted to be with people who DIDN’T treat her like shit.
