🎂Gif Quote Series: Romancing Mister Bridgerton by Julia Quinn🎂

Jun 11, 2022 20:46

This is kind of a rough draft of my eventual gif quote series post of Romancing Mister Bridgerton.  My edition, from the box set.  When Netflix releases season 3, I will definitely make some changes to this post.  Meanwhile, this is just a way to keep all of my gif quotes in order :)  Comment threads can become a mess, after a while. By the way, yellow was my favourite colour as a child :)

Romancing Mr. Bridgerton

‘’Penelope Featherington fell in love. It was, in a word, thrilling. The world shook. Her heart leaped. The moment was breathtaking. And she was able to tell herself with some satisfaction, the man in question-one Colin Bridgerton-felt the same way.’’ Page 1.

Penelope’s mother refused to allow Penelope to choose her own clothing, and when she wasn’t in the requisite white that most young ladies wore (and which of course didn’t flatter her complexion one bit), she was forced to wear yellow and red and orange, all of which made her look perfectly wretched.

The one time Penelope had suggested green, Mrs. Featherington had planted her hands on her more-than-ample hips and declared that green was too melancholy.

Yellow, Mrs. Featherington declared, was a happy colour and a happy girl would snare a husband.

Penelope decided then and there that it was best not to try to understand the workings of her mother’s mind.

So Penelope found herself outfitted in yellow and orange and the occasional red, even though such colours made her look decidedly unhappy, and in fact were positively ghastly with her brown eyes and red-tinged hair. There was nothing she could do about it, though, so she decided to grin and bear it, and if she couldn’t manage a grin, at least she wouldn’t cry in public.

Which, she took some pride in noting, she never did.

He always had something nice to say to Penelope, and when she finally worked up the courage to say something back (other than the very basic greetings and farewells), he actually listened. Penelope judged that Colin Bridgerton was the only man with whom she’d managed an entire conversation. Pages 8-9

And in a testament to the bad timing that had plagued her throughout her life, the first voice she heard was Colin's, and the words were not kind.

"...and I am certainly not going to marry Penelope Featherington!" Page 11

“Unrequited love was never easy, but at least Penelope Featherington was used to it.” Page 16

“Penelope.” He smiled warmly. “It’s good to see you.”

“And you.”

He rocked on his heels-once, twice, thrice-then said, “You look well.”

“And you,” she said, too preoccupied with trying to figure out where to set down her éclair to offer much variety to her conversation

“That’s a nice dress,” he said, motioning to her green silk gown.

She smiled ruefully, explaining, “It’s not yellow.”

“So it’s not.” He grinned, and the ice was broken. It was strange, because one would think her tongue would be tied the tightest around the man she loved, but there was something about Colin that set everyone at ease.

Maybe, Penelope had thought on more than one occasion, part of the reason she loved him was that he made her feel comfortable with herself.

Colin surprised himself by holding out his hand and saying, “Penelope Featherington, I think you should dance with me.”

And then Penelope surprised him by laughing and saying, “That’s very sweet of you to ask, but you don’t have to dance with me any longer.”

His pride felt oddly pricked. “What the devil do you mean by that?”

She shrugged. “It’s official now. I’m a spinster. There’s no longer a reason to dance with me just so that I don’t feel left out.”

“That’s not why I danced with you,” he protested, but he knew that it was exactly the reason. And half the time he’d only remembered to ask because his mother had poked him-hard- in the back and reminded him.

She gave him a faintly pitying look, which galled him, because he’d never thought to be pitied by Penelope Featherington

"If you think,“ he said, feeling his spine grow stiff, “that I’m going to allow you to wiggle out of a dance with me now, you’re quite delusional.”

“You don’t have to dance with me just to prove you don’t mind doing it,” she said.

"I want to dance with you,“ he fairly growled.

"Very well,” she said, after what seemed to be a ridiculously long pause. “It would surely be churlish for me to refuse.”

“It was probably churlish of you to doubt my intentions,” he said as he took her arm, “but I’m willing to forgive you if you can forgive yourself."

When his eyes met hers, they were filled with humor and maybe just a touch of admiration. And something else she’d never thought to see - vulnerability, hesitancy, and even insecurity. Page 101

“Colin?“ she asked, her voice barely audible. "Could I ask you a favor?”

Call it male intuition, call it insanity, but a very insistent voice inside of him was screaming that whatever she wanted had to be a very bad idea. He was, however, an idiot. He had to be, because he felt his lips part and then he heard a voice that sounded an awful lot like his own say,

"Of course.“

Her lips puckered, and for a moment he thought she was trying to kiss him, but then he realized that she was just bringing them together to form a word.

"Would-” Just a word. Nothing but a word beginning with W. W always looked like a kiss. “Would you kiss me?“

“People will stop talking to you,” he continued. “They will cut you dead -”

“People never talked to me,” she snapped. “Half the time they didn’t even know I was there. How do you think I was able to keep up the ruse for so long in the first place? I was invisible, Colin. No one saw me, no one talked to me. I just stood and listened, and no one noticed.” Page 230

Cressida, renowned for her grace and carriage, tripping and spilling punch on Penelope’s gown that first year-the only one her mother had allowed her to buy that wasn’t yellow or orange. Page 239

His love hadn’t been a thunderbolt from the sky. It had started with a smile, a word, a teasing glance. Every second he had spent in her presence it had grown, until he’d reached this moment, and he suddenly knew.

He loved her.

“I love you,“ she whispered. "I’ve loved you for years.”

“I know,“ he said, surprising himself with his words. He had known, he supposed, but he’d thrust it from his mind because her love made him uncomfortable.

His face softened, and he crossed back to her side. He murmured her name, tenderly taking her face in his hands. “I love you,” he said, his voice low and fervent. “I love you with everything I am, everything I’ve been, and everything I hope to be.”

“Colin…”

“I love you with my past, and I love you for my future.” He bent forward and kissed her, once, softly, on the lips. “I love you for the children we’ll have and for the years we’ll have together. I love you for every one of my smiles, and even more, for every one of your smiles.”
