kind of surprising that it took disney this long to make a talking book in the batb universe

I was thinking the same thing 😂

Didn’t the 2017 remake give the Beast a magical book that allowed him to travel anywhere? It’s strange how he had access to something like that and yet never used it until Belle came along. Even more strange how Belle chose (of all places) to go to where her mom died from a plaque. God, that movie is such a mess. :(

Oh right, I guess they tried to make an updated version of the magic mirror. It was kind of a trainwreck dumpster fire. The more I think about it and the more posts I read on tumblr, the more I realize how bad it was D:

I will always be bitter about how badly Disney messed up that movie. It could have been a wonderful live action remake but they made SO MANY MISTAKES. Ugh 😣

Sad thing is, it made Disney a lot of money at the box office so they don't even care. :\

I know. 😞 Unfortunately, I feel like these days Disney cares more about making money than they do about making good quality films. 😔

You think the Beast would have used that book to try to...meet a girl to break the spell? Also, why didn't Belle use the book to quickly transport herself to the village to save her father? Why did the Enchantress even leave the book in the first place??

Good questions! :)

I think it’s definitely possible that the Beast used that book at least once (before meeting Belle) in hopes he’d meet someone who could break his spell, but then after being rejected for his monstrous appearance he gave up and never used the book again.

Again, that would have made so much more sense. Why go back to her sick father on horseback when she has access to faster form of transportation? It’s just so ridiculous how Disney added all these extra stuff when 1) it brought nothing meaningful to the story and 2) it didn’t even make sense.

Yeah, it is very odd that the Enchantress left the Beast a book like that. Maybe it was her way of punishing him more - by giving him access to a magical form of transportation … all while fully knowing that he still wouldn’t be able to go out anywhere into society without being judged.

If the latter part is true, in my opinion that just makes the Enchantress a worse villain than Gaston (which I already think for several reasons).

I agree. I always thought that the Enchantress must’ve been quite evil to put such a harsh punishment on a young boy (contrary to the live action remake, the BatB animated films depict the prince as being very young when he was curse) and on top of that … to also curse everyone who lived the castle - including other children and even the dog - is just so petty. And all because he refused to give shelter in his home to a complete stranger? Again, seems like an extremely harsh punishment to give over something like that.

Kinda reminds me of when Maleficent put a curse on Aurora in Sleeping Beauty simply because she wasn’t invited to a party, lol.

The 2017 live action remake had the opportunity to portray the Enchantress as the true villain of the story. Or at least have her working along side with Gaston somehow. I think it’s rather creepy how she actually lives in the village near the castle that she put a curse on. It makes me wonder if perhaps she chose to live nearby because she wanted to keep an eye on the Beast and possibly jeopardize any of his chances of lifting the curse. 🤔

Randomly butting in here to say this is something I hate about As Old As Time, the batb Twisted Tales book.

The author makes Belle's mother the enchantress.

It's kind of unsettling when you think about it. That in this book, Belle is related to the woman who cursed an entire castle of staff to become animated objects, at the mercy of a selfish prince finding true love to break the curse. It's like, she held the everyone who ever worked there hostage, because the Beast didn't pass her shitty test.

Interestingly enough, I don't think the enchanted objects age. They are frozen in time. It's basically like the sleeping curse, except they are awake.

Wow 😯 I didn’t know about that. Yeah, I really don’t like the idea of Belle’s mother being the Enchantress. That doesn’t work for me at all, but thankfully these books are just alternative universes of the Disney films.

An even more glaring detail is that in the 2017 novelization, it states that the Wardrobe and her piano playing husband were VISITING the castle and playing for the Prince for that night only, and were going to leave like the next day. WHY did the Enchantress curse them?? Visitors?? That's beyond cruel.

Her reasoning for turning the entire staff into objects was also ridiculous. So, they didn't stop the Prince from becoming cruel? Didn't stop his father from poisoning him?? Are you kidding me?? The Enchantress expected staff members to ROYALTY to go up to the king (?) and be like "Hey, stop your terrible treatment towards your son"?? STAFF MEMBERS TO ROYALTY?? They'd be thrown in the dungeons or executed for such an act! It's not on them nor their fault, my word!

It was so creepy how she chose to just chill in the nearby town. Why? Why is she so invested about this?? If Disney had wanted to do something different with this adaptation, they should have made her the villain.

Wow 😯 I had no idea that the Disney novelization included those details. Sounds like she just hated everyone and wanted to punish anyone who associated with the prince.

I mean, really … other than denying her shelter inside his castle, what did he do to her? What did ANY of them to do her? Nothing! As spoiled and selfish as the prince was, he still didn’t deserve such a harsh punishment for that. And frankly, I don’t know anyone who allow a complete stranger to stay in the their home. I would have probably been cursed too because there’s no way she’d be staying in my place either, lol.

And like you said, it’s illogical for the Enchantress to expect servants to confront their “masters”. They can’t exactly risk loosing their employment in the castle (or worse - lose their lives) by speaking up against royalty. It’s not their fault that the king was abusive towards his son and that the prince grew up to be cold hearted. To curse them all simply because the servants were associated with them is just beyond cruel and insane.

Maybe someday someone - an author or a different film studio - will write a new retelling of BatB where the Enchantress is the real villain of the story and would better explain her reasoning for putting the curse on everyone in the first place.
