I find it interesting that Sara was expected to keep up with schoolwork, but she was only allowed to study in the school room at night. There is a scene later on in the book where Ermengarde brings Sara her books from her father to the attic and Miss Minchin gets very upset.

In the 1995 movie, Sara's schooling completely stopped.

I actually like this change in the 1995 movie because it’s unrealistic for a child to be able to go to work every day and still have the energy to keep up with schoolwork. Same with Cinderella - how could she of had the time/energy to study and educated herself when she was working all the time?

That makes a lot of sense. I guess in the book, Sara was a "maid-of-all-work", but because of her former wealth and her worldly education, she was a maid of a higher status than Becky.

She had to keep up with her schoolwork so she could continue to tutor the smaller children. "If she had been older, Miss Minchin would have given her the bigger girls to teach and saved money by dismissing an instructress.."

But it makes a lot more sense that her schooling would have completely stopped. I think it did as well in the 1939 movie.

"Soldier's don't complain"

This is a phrase Sara says a lot in the 1939 movie - the one with Shirley Temple.

I wish I could find more gifs of that movie XD

I love when she says that phrase. :D

I haven’t seen the Shirley Temple movie in years. I think they’re playing on Tubi now too.

It's definitely on Amazon Prime Video. It's a lot closer to the book than the 1995 movie, a lot of the dialogue remains intact from the book. There is a whole side plot with one of the teachers falling in love with Sara's riding coach (I guess like the side plot in the 1995 movie of Miss Amelia and the baker).

I agree - there are so many similarities with them. I always felt that A Little Princess was very much an AU version of Cinderella.

And it’s true about Lady Tremaine and Cinderella having a very unique dynamic compared to other Heroes/Villains. I think the only other Disney film that managed to do that as well was Tangled.

That's a good point. I didn't think about that. Rapunzel saw Mother Gothel on the daily.
