In the movie, the speech about the "secret life of dolls" is delivered by Ralph Crewe, Sarah's father.
RC: You know I think I saw something. On that chair over there. She came all the way from France just to be with you. Her name is Emily.
SC: Emily!
RC: You know dolls make the very best friends. Just because they can't speak doesn't mean they don't listen. And did you know that when we leave them alone in our room they come to life?
SC: They do?
RC: Yes! But before we walk in and catch them, they return to their places quick as lightning!
SC: Why don't they come to live in front of us so we can see them."
RC: Because it's magic. Magic has to be believed. That's the only way it's real....Whenever you're afraid or miss me terribly, just tell Emily and she'll get a message to me wherever I am, and then I'll send one back right aways so that when you hug her, you'll really be getting a hug from me."
It's hard to type that out without crying.
Sarah is a storyteller, she likes to pretend and imagine, so in the book this was all from her.
It's extra emotional that the writers gave this part to her father, he wanted to give her some magic, something to believe in, when he went away.
That why I feel like the 1995 adaptation is the best, because any changes in the movie only strengthen Frances Hogson Burnett's message.
