Book pp. 8-9
Sara was to be what was known as a 'parlour-boarder', and she was to enjoy even greater privileges than parlour boarders usually did. She was to have a pretty bedroom and a sitting-room of her own; she was to have a pony and a carriage, and a maid to take the place of the ayah who had been her nurse in India.

Movie
Miss Minchin: The very idea of delivering a thing like this at the front door!"
Sara: Oh, look, Daddy, my pony!
...
Miss Minchin: There are a number of things besides the pony: parcels have been arriving her collect for your daughter for hours.
Upon Miss Minchin learning about how rich Sara is--
Miss Minchin: It would be a pleasure to have her with us.
Sarah: Does that mean I have to stay?
Miss Minchin: Yes dear, you are to have that privilege. You and your little pony.

The book:
Captain Crewe: "The difficulty will be to keep her from learning too fast and too much. She is always sitting with her little nose burrowing into books. She doesn't read them, Miss Minchin; she gobbles them up as if she were a ( ... )

From the book:
“Are you learning me by heart, little Sara?" he said, stroking her hair.
"No," she answered. "I know you by heart. You are inside my heart.” And they put their arms round each other, and kissed as if they would never let each other go. pp.14

From the movie:
Captain Crewe: You're learning me by heart little Sara.
Sara: No Daddy, I know you by heart. You are inside my heart.

she was really really sweet. she has a really cute little face.

interesting tough that in the book, sarah has black hair and green eyes. I haven't really seen an adaptation with sarah looking like how she was described in the book.

becky isn't really described in the book that much, just that she always looks tired and sad.

ermengarde is supposed to be kind of chubby, lottie is very little, and lavinia is really sour, but she doesn't really describe them that much.

That’s true. Sara has almost always been portrayed as being blonde or with light brown hair. It would be nice to see a new adaption of ALP (maybe by Netflix) where she actually looks the way that she’s described in the book.

Maybe I’m remembering wrong but I think Becky is described as being a few years older than Sara (possibly 10 or 11?) but because she’s so undernourished and has never received a proper education, she still seems to have the maturity level of a 7 year old.

I kinda wish the other girls weren’t just described by their appearances and/or level of education. I know the focus of the book has to be on Sara, though.

There are "sequels" written by other authors but they just didn't "feel" like the book

But in these "sequels" the other girls are described more, their interests, their personalities, what they like reading, etc.

A Little Princess is such a little and precious and quirky book, that when people try to "extend" the story and "flesh" out the characters, it doesn't work.

Maybe we should write a continuation ourselves? Just because the books that are out there "Wishing for Tomorrow" and "A Little Princess Finds her Voice" are really strange xD

Yeah, I understand what you mean. Sequels to classic novels never really worked for me either.

Maybe in a Netflix tv series they could maintain the spirit of the book while also expanding a little bit more on the other girls characters.

Haha, maybe we should! 😄

I actually have written some FanFiction in the past but it’s mostly been about rock bands … lol

I have always wondered about what Sara would have been like as adult, though. I imagine she would still be trying to help people who are less fortunate than her and I can see her maybe becoming a writer or playwriting for the stage. Or maybe she would have become a teacher and try to mentor young girls with patience and kindness. So many interesting possibilities but maybe it’s best to leave that to the reader’s imagination. :)

That would be cool. There are so many miniseries on Netflix, and a whole lot on Disney Plus. Disney has adapted TPD with Anne Hathaway, and TPD is based on ALP, but I really wanna see them adapt A Little Princess in a miniseries. Or put the 1995 movie on their app, because everyone assumes it's Disney anyway XDD

I have to go to sleep now hon, I'm really tired after the vaccine today, but I had tons of fun, and I will reply to the comments I missed tomorrow ♥

So true! It really should be on Disney+ because everyone always assumes it’s a Disney film, haha.

Unfortunately, though, A Little Princess 1995 is a WB film … so it’s only streaming on AmazonPrime, Hulu and HBOmax right now. Good thing I still have so many of my DVDs because I can’t afford to pay for all of these subscriptions lol

Looking forward to our TLM2 watch-along tomorrow. :)

Awww, that video is so cute. :D

Okay, hun, talk to you tomorrow. Sleep well ♥️
