I am watching The Little Princess on Prime Video right now, the 1939 movie with Shirley Temple.
Here are some gifs I found from tumblr.
Shirley Temple is so precious and adorable. Somehow the way she talks, her temperament, makes me think of Snow White. Which is not surprising because Snow White came out two years before this movie was made.
The film takes place in London, within the context of the Boer War in South Africa in 1899. It is a bit closer in terms of plot and setting to the original book, as opposed to the 1995 film that takes place in New York, although I don't remember a pony in the book. The "Menny Appy Returns" pillow was in the movie, this was straight out of the book. In the 1995 version, Becky makes Sara a pillow with an embroidered scene from India. I do feel like in general, older adaptations follow the source material more closely. The 1995 version will always be dear to my heart, but this version is very sweet and follows the book really well.
Friends locked post in a bit.
