Today was one hell of a day. Almost too much to go in to. Much bad. Much good. All up and downy.
I just discovered the greatest thing.
The Transcendence Gospel Choir It's a gospel choir comprised entirely on trans folks. You can hear them here:
http://cdbaby.com/cd/tgc Their mission: (It's actually worth the read. Some powerful reclamation of Christianity and Jesus's message going on.)
The Transcendence Gospel Choir shall be a music ministry for the transgender community and shall perform contemporary gospel music in worship services, at pride events, and as outreach to the community itself.
Recognizing that religion is one of the main weapons used to justify and perpetuate misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, and intolerance of diversity, the choir's mission is to challenge those ideas from WITHIN a place of faith. Because transgendered people throughout history have played significant roles in spiritual worship, TGC strives to empower that community and reclaim that calling.
The choir membership shall consist entirely of transgendered individuals. The choir's mission shall be to heal the wounds of transgendered people that have been excluded and abandoned by Christian churches by demonstrating that the preconceived notion of a bi-polar, heterosexual, hetero-gendered "natural order" is not reflected in the nature of God or the ministry of Jesus Christ. In this way we will challenge intolerance and hatred, transcend boundaries and restore hope to our community. Let us be like a river in the desert (Isaiah 35:6).
Our creed shall be that:
• We acknowledge the strong spiritual calling of the transgender experience.
• We remember the mystical and healing responsibilities of our trans-ancestors: priests, shamans, two-spirits, and hijra.
• We empower ourselves and reclaim our calling.
• We answer the call to spirituality while affirming who we are, like Saint Joan of Arc.
Course I love worship music. That might be news to some of you. I love me some gospel music. I focus on the Spirit of the music and message, rather than the specific theology (which of course, drives me crazy.)
