We read entries from the Dictionary with Pierce, who remembers the whole episode with Bobbie. Rosie comes by to visit and invites him over to Arcady. She tells him how she lost custody of Sam, sympathizes for his loss of Rose. They drink together as Pierce describes his amor heroes. Rosie reveals she slept with Rose, and shortly after takes Pierce to bed with her, comforting herself and him in Spofford's absence.
Beau drives out of the City, covering old ground, listening to the Gnostic radio station in his car. He remembers his past travels, including his time in the Cumberlands seeking out the believers of the "more perfect Gospel", finding the followers of Plato Goodenough who refused the world utterly and starved himself to death. Beau himself is not allowed to pass on; he must play his part, find Sophia and free her from the prison of the Demiurge. He realizes then that she is in his own backyard and turns the car around.
Back at home, Pierce works on his costume for the Ball. He reads about the ASS in the Dictionary, and falls asleep dreaming that the knight's-helm-turned-donkey-mask is telling Bruno's story of Onorio. Rosie and Val get ready for the party, Val dressed as the Sibyl and Rosie dressing in Boney's old clothes turned backwards. (While looking for a mask to wear, she comes upon the tintype of Shakespeare that Dee made in the first book, and tosses it back in a drawer.) Her rummaging and thoughts of redecorating, and Val's acceptance of never knowing if he was her father, liberate Boney's soul from Arcady. Rose picks Pierce up for the Ball, dressed as elegant Night.
