laid-back Saturday night

Muzzy, bleary day. I slept too late, got up and puttered, finally went out to check my P.O. box (nothing but the new issue of Poetry -- I swear I get a new issue every three days or so -- I can't keep up) and get some lunch at the Village Deli, then went to Evil Corporate Coffee HQ and had a white chocolate mocha and wrote in my journal & read for a bit. It snowed off and on, feathery flakes that didn't really mean much of anything. Now I'm home, having watched a movie ("A Home at the End of the World," based on the novel by Michael Cunningham) and talked to my mom on the phone and puttered around a bit, listening to some most excellent jazz -- "Live at the Iron Works, Vancouver" by the trio Fonda Altschul Bang (Joe Fonda on bass, Barry Altschul on drums, and Billy Bang on violin).

I picked up this CD last night at the Quincy Troupe/Billy Bang performance, which was just exhilarating. Quincy Troupe read poetry and Billy Bang improvised on violin and it wasn't "poetry set to music" or "music as a background to poetry" but really a conversation, the way good jazz always is. Billy Bang is a phenomenal musician & has played with such luminaries as Sun Ra and Don Cherry. Afterwards I bought a book and two CDs and had them all signed, chatted with Quincy and Billy a little bit. For those of you who don't follow poetry, you may be more impressed if I mention that Quincy Troupe co-wrote the screenplay for the Will Smith movie "The Pursuit of Happyness" and is currently working on a movie based on his book about Miles Davis. (He doesn't know who's gonna play Miles yet.)

I do love me some good jazz.
