I attended an Indian wedding over the weekend. My cubicle buddy, MM, was solemnised in the temple after a long Indian ceremony, and I was so happy for her.
I'd never attended an Indian wedding before, so I had no idea what to expect. The first thing I realised was that HOLY SHIT IT'S LOUD. Yes, the Indian music blasting loudly from the speakers threatened to burst my eardrums.
The ceremony was longgggg and took more than 2 hours. I couldn't see anything because a lot of people were standing in front of me. All the chairs were taken up and therefore most people were standing. At the rare occassions where I could see the activities happening on stage, I had no idea what they were doing or what it symbolised, therefore it didn't matter much.
There was also a lot of queueing. I had to queue for half an hour at the buffet line for my food, and then gobble it down and leave the table because someone else would be standing next to you, waiting to take over your seat. Because the wedding was held in a temple, MM had to cater vegetarian food, which was awful. The mock mutton rendang was terrible and tasted nothing like mutton. Even the papadums weren't crispy.
I then had to queue for more than half an hour just to go up on the stage and shake hands with her. She looked exhausted because the gold accessories she was wearing on her head where very heavy.
One thing I absolutely loved though, was seeing all the various saris. It was like a scene out of a Bollywood movie, with all the bright-coloured costumes and gold embroidery. All in all, it was a good experience to see what an Indian wedding was like, but I would not attend one again.
I can't wait to attend her wedding reception on Saturday. The hotel dinner would be so much better.
