Fanwide wank has got me down.
I am just too new to really understand it, I don't have long-term emotion invested in the fan world, I don't have hurt/love from fic I've written (because I don't write fic) and the only thing I do know, for certain, that I feel about all this wank is that I HATE when people at cons ask the boys (or any of the guests) what they think about fanfiction. I would feel totally squicked out if people were writing bawdy stories about me. When the boys are at Cons or doing interviews its not exactly purely because they want to interact with the fans, if that were true then there would be no regulations/restrictions and no money passing hands. I believe such an occurrence is called 'hanging out with friends' and please, let's not delude ourselves, Jared and Jensen are not our friends, we are their fans.
As such, I think it's in bad taste to bring up topics at cons that extend beyond the working and maybe basic personnel. If my boss started asking me personnel questions I would probably tolerate it at first, out of the desire not to create tension with my boss, but eventually it would make me profoundly uncomfortable and probably seriously taint my experience with that person. Anytime that the boys are promoting SPN they are under a fair amount of pressure not to alienate the fans. They need to keep us happy so that we'll keep watching the show and buying the merchandise so that the show will continue to exist. So when a fangirl asks what Jensen thinks about Wincest (or whatever) she's putting him in a position where he needs to be accepting so as not to offend his fans, even if deep down he's really going 'ewww!'. It's just......silly! If I were to walk up to a stranger on the street and ask them if they thought I was ugly what would the stranger say? They sure as fuck wouldn't say 'yeah! You're totally gross!' because that's not how humans interact with each other! Even if Jensen (boy chosen at random) thinks that writing gay, incestuous porn in morally reprehensible it's not like he can freely say so in a room full of people who he knows probably are pretty big fans of that kind of thing.
