Trillian's okay, but it costs money (if you want to be legit and want all the benefits), is bulky, and has a lot of annoying things like not letting you view HTML in buddy profiles.
Gaim, on the other hand, is open source, just as prettyable as Trillian, and you can add your own features if you feel like it. (I do prefer how Trillian handles logging, however)
I use gaim from time to time, and overall it just never felt up to snuff. While Im a big fan of the open source movement, but in this instance i just like trillian better. The skinability of trillian is what i use as far as making it "pretty" and i havent run accross anything in gaim that allows me that kind of flexibility and customization capability. I just use the trial version of trillian for free that doesnt really lack any of the features I value. The only problem you mentioned that bothers me is that it doesnt allow me to view html in buddy profiles, but this is very seldom an issue. -gp
