Happy Birthday to Me
Spoilers: Firefly in General

Summary: It’s River’s birthday
“River, honey, what are you doing?” Sheppard Book asked, looking up from where he sat at the dining room table. River was rummaging through the kitchen, almost frantically.
“I’m making my own cake,” she called to him from the kitchen. “Must make exact measurements.”
Book stopped what he was doing and moved beside her, watching as she expertly measured ingredients. “Can I help?” He didn’t want to tell her to stop because she seemed to know what she was doing, but also didn’t want her to make a mess either.
“Not now. My birthday.”
“Well, if it’s your birthday, then usually someone else makes the cake for you. I’d be happy to…”
“No!” she snapped suddenly. “I’m making my own cake and you have to eat it too.”
“I’d love to try some when you get it done,” Book replied, going back to his study, but resolved to keep an eye on her. “Let me know if I can help.”
“Chocolate. Sweet,” she commented randomly.
“Chocolate is a good choice,” Book agreed.
“What’s going on here?” Simon asked as he entered the kitchen area.
“Your sister has decided to make her own birthday cake to celebrate the occasion.”
Simon’s expression immediately turned to concern and he moved beside River. “That’s not really necessary. I can finish here.” He gently took River’s hands. She, of course, fought it.
“It’s my cake. I’m making it!” she insisted.
“I’ll keep an eye on her. She’s been doing a fine job so far.”
“I’m not sure,” he started, with his usual uncertainty.
“It’s fine boy. I’ll keep watch over her. Let her work.”
“It’s chocolate!” River chimed in, her face cheerful once again.
“Okay, well, chocolate it is, I guess.”
