Last night, I took my fellow keyboardist buddy, Travis to see The Chick Corea Elektric Band at the Catalina Jazz Club in Hollywood. The show completely blew me away, but
let's get into specifics!
I drove down to Travis' place in Huntington Beach earlier in the day and helped him with his last three online tests of the semester. He totally waited last minute to finish these, but I'm reluctant to say that I actually had FUN doing three 70 question tests about film music. Running a bit late, we left his place around 5:30 and got to the venue around 7:30. I asked the host to sit us keyboard-side of the stage, and we did! I can even show you:
I could've seriously, from my seat, grabbed his pedals....or his legs. Haha
Travis waiting in excitement.
Us waiting in excitement.
So we chowed on some overpriced meal waiting for the show to start. Victor Wooten even came out for a sound check and tuning while we were eating. I was too bashful to call anything out to his "funkafied" soul, but I took a picture anyway:
I think Dave Weckl comes out to check for levels as well....but anyway, around 8:40 all the guys come out, and I'm ready for some ACTION. They opened with "Trance Dance", a song which I LOVE. They didn't play "Got a Match?" but I heard they had played it the night before...and you know jazz musicians. They get bored playing the same set every night. I have never seen Chick Corea play live before, so this definitely was a treat. He was sporting a Fender Rhodes, Moog Voyager, TWO Yamaha Motifs (XS models), and a Yamaha keytar. Stylin'.
Every single one of those cats are masters at what they do. Eric Marienthal is an amazing horn player and totally can keep up with Frank Gambale's rippin' solos, but I think the player that really got me last night was Victor Wooten. I've never seen a tighter bassist. NEVAH EVAH. He's a total sweetheart too! After the show I got a picture with him:
I told Victor Wooten that he was "Tiiiiight". haha. I think he said something like "Thank you, darlin'."
I even got some merch! I never get merch at shows but there was this really good deal for a CD+T-shirt for $25. That was a good night. I got to pop Travis' "Chick cherry" as well as fulfill one of my concert-seeing goals.
One last picture!
