lbr, the avenger cameo was the best part

I went to see Thor 2! I did not even go at midnight, but at the reasonable hour of 9 pm! And sdkhjgffg IT WAS SO GREAT.

I was really meh on the first ten minutes or so -- like, did we really need dramatic battle exposition? we could have learned most of that when Thor and Jane went to Odin and he had his book of illuminated manuscript exposition -- and I suspect that without reading the comic, the bit where Thor + Sif and the Warriors + whatever Asgardian extras were going from realm to realm wouldn't have made much sense; like, I knew that they were going in to be the renewed Asgardian police force now that the Bifrost is fixed and they can get places and enforce the peace again, but I don't know how clear that was? Eh, whatever, I didn't get properly into the film until Jane and Darcy and the intern (...Ian? oh man I'm as bad as Darcy) started poking around the convergence site. But then I WAS SO INTO IT.

I was spoiled ahead of time about Frigga dying, first by rumor and then by confirming with overseas friends who'd already seen the film, so that ... was fortunate, actually; I was able to have a cry and then go through the rest of the story without being in numb unhappy shock. I am still super mad they did it! Like, I get that it's horrible enough to give Loki good motivation to prioritize screwing over the dark elves above screwing over Thor, but -- look, just while typing this sentence I realized that the plot could be exactly the same, with added Frigga-in-on-the-heist, if instead of dying, she agrees to help Thor and Loki and Jane escape and save the world. Like. I think she'd be into Jane being well and her boys saving the world! She knows Odin's priorities are fucked! And Loki would still go along with it, obviously he'd love to be out of prison. (Frigga being alive would make Loki's endgame more complicated, I grant you, but that's okay too!) ANYWAY I'M NOT HAPPY, I AM NEVER HAPPY WITH FRIDGING.

But oh my god was I happy with lots of other things. The Captain America cameo! Everything Darcy chooses to be! The amazing and hilarious multi-realm final fight! And especially how I couldn't guess where things were going half the time. Obviously I was able to guess things like Loki prioritizing screwing over the dark elves above screwing over Thor, and that he was totally faking his death, and that, y'know, the story was going to follow a plotline that involved an epic final fight with the dark elves, but even that was delightful. And there was an unexpected heist! Seriously, clandestine meetings, Sif and the Warriors and Heimdall (Heimdall!!!) all plotting with Thor to commit treason, actual best thing to ever.

Or. Actual best thing besides everything Jane did? I loved her being all "LET'S DO THAT AGAIN" after traveling by Bifrost, and her questioning the healers and translating what they were doing into terms she knew, and being nervous and adorable about meeting Thor's parents, and staying remarkably calm about the wacky multi-realm ordeal she was going through, and then saving the worlds with science! JANE <333

OKAY so you all know that I'm in this for Thor and Loki's relationship, right? Right. And what I love about this film's iteration is that they are both so settled into who they are, and thus are ... settling into who they are around each other, too? Thor is much too smart to ever really trust Loki again (tricks him, handcuffs him!!), but still relies on him to do really crucial world-saving things; Loki took advantage of being stabbed to fake his death and escape, but got all stabbed in the first place because he swooped in to save Thor's life. And argh, the bit where Loki's going to be sucked up into a vortex and then Thor snatches him out of the sky! Or the bit where they start punching each other aboard ship and have the great exchange where Thor says "Mother wouldn't want us to fight," and Loki counters with "But she wouldn't be that surprised," and then they sad-giggle at each other oh godddd. I am just super into the permutation of this relationship in which they're never actually going to talk through all their hideous issues but they start to have this realization that they understand one another and just have way too many FEELINGS to ever let each other go, ahhhhh.

Also, Loki won?? LOKI WON. Thor gave up the throne (GOOD CALL, Thor, and I love that this film did not shy away from the understanding that effective king = AWFUL PERSON, OH HELL YES, though even while acknowledging that Odin is awful it did not ... really examine creepy Asgardian imperialism, oh well) and then OH LOOK LOKI HAS THE THRONE NOW. I really want to know what he did with Odin! I really want to know if Heimdall is under arrest or if he's actually just chilling in his observatory again, and if so, whether he knows Loki is king and is just sitting there with popcorn because he is no longer Team Odin, and while he may be Team Thor, he is totally into watching what happens next without politicking this one. I JUST DON'T KNOW.

What I do know is that I need to see this film at least two more times and then write ... probably Loki/Thor/Jane fic with lots of Asgardian politics in. YEP.
