OKAY.
Roughly a month after I first started rambling about it, I present: the Fraser/Kowalski/Vecchio fic. I could not possibly have completed it with any competence whatsoever without olivia_circe and nextian there to beta for me, tell me about the bit in the middle where an entire chunk of the emotional arc was missing, and generally cheerlead; I probably could also not have done it if I didn't have nai_is_not living down the hall and willing to listen to me first thing in the morning when I attacked her at breakfast going "IT IS EVEN LONGER NOW LISTEN TO THE NEW STUFF." Ladies, I salute & adore you.
Anyway: Ray Kowalski's arctic & Chicago love affairs, a murder, some inadvisable makeouts, and probably no alligators in the sewers. No actual UChicago students were harmed in the making of this fic. Magnetic. Enjoy!
