Wizard Rock, Part III

I agian come baring reviews for Wizard Rock. This time with so many more because my computer back home works much better then the one here. Not sure why, though I'm sure it has something to do with the proxy, stupid proxy, foiling me at every turn!!

The Whomping Willows
This band has some amazing beats to it, I was almost immediately drawn in to the bands use of drums and guitars and other instrumentals. The lyrics, while good, are not the main focus, or at least they aren't for me, the sound is what is so ear-catching.

Not to put down the lyrics. These lyrics are much more creative an entertaining then the bands I reviewed last time. All of them have something to do with the Whomping Willow tree. And each one is pulled off amazingly well. It's hard enough for so many bands to come up with original lyrics, and then on top of that they only sing about the Whomping Willow! It's quite a feat, and it's quite good. This is one band I'm sure could become "popular", even with the lyrics being Harry Potter based.

Ron and the Weasley's
When the main vocalist began singing my first thought was "he's the next Bright Eyes", but as time went on I realized he wasn't nearly up to par. They have some great potential, however, it isn't there yet. The vocals are really lacking and the instrumentals and lyrics are really very repetitive in all their songs. They sing about different things, but it all sounds about the same. They do bring a nice twist to the books, but really, they're very behind in this movement.

The Weird Sisters
If anyone knows me, you'll know that when I discovered this band it would be the one I'd be most excited to review. And yet at the same time, I was fearful that this band would not live up to my expectations. I tried to review it last time, but my computer wouldn't let me hear any of the songs, so I left it until I got home.

It was the third one I listened too, I was sitting down eating a bit of dessert when I clicked on their Myspace and as soon as the song started playing my mouth dropped open and I sat in wonderment. I had built myself up to be sure that the music would be horrible that when the beautifully strummed music and lyrics came out of my speakers I was speechless.

Its a fast paced band with some of the most developed instrumentals I've heard of all of them, honestly. They don't even remotely sound like they are a small movement band in the backroads of Myspace. They could be professional. The lyrics are Harry Potter based, yet they aren't tied to characters, instead they focus on things like "Secret Keeper" or "Auror's". It's amazing, truly amazing.

About the only downfall I could find with them was that a couple of their songs sound like some of the others. The beats are kind of the same, though the lyrics have changed.

Ginny and the Weasley's
I wish I had something good to say about this band. I was really hoping that a Weasley band would redeem themselves, and honestly I'm not trying to be mean, not in my nature. However, this band sounded like it recorded themselves in their parent's basement, with a guitar or something as their only instrument. The lyrics are hard to understand, I'm not sure if that's because the recording's so bad or the singer doesn't know what their doing, or if the lyrics are just that confusing, but whatever the reason, its just not good. I hate to say it, but this one needs a lot of work.

The Moaning Myrtles
These girls are funny. The lyrics, hilarious; the voices, great; but they lack two things, good recording and instruments. Not necessarily that they need more, they just need to develop them more. Work them into the songs better.

They wouldn't be getting the rating they're getting if it wasn't for the fact that the absolute hilarity of the lyrics was there and that they really could do it if they just worked a little harder. They really could be great, just with a little more work.

I wasn't going to originally review this band yet, but I got bored, and man oh man, am I glad I did. This is another AMAZING band. I couldn't help but enjoy the lyrics, though they do lean to either be rappy or techno-y. None of this is a bad thing, AT ALL! The techno-y beats are jumpy and fun and its a very professionally done recording.

The lyrics are great, and if I had some off hand I'd tell you which were my favorites, but as I said, this computer doesn't let me to listen like I'd want too. I do have one qualm...THEY NEED MORE SONGS!

The Dark Markers
This was the last band I listened too, having heard both really good ones and really bad ones this one...it leaned more to the bad side. But not for the same reasons as the others. It was done pretty professionally, but the vocals were shaky and all of the songs were pretty much repeats of one another, lyric-wise and sound-wise.

Of course it was an interesting take on the books, from the evil side of view, and they did use sound-bites in an different way, but overall, it just lacked good music.
