Well that was exciting

PITTSBURGH -- A fast-moving line of severe thunderstorms moved through southwestern Pennsylvania early Wednesday evening with wind gusts in excess of 60 mph, leaving thousands without power.

WTAE Weather Watch 4 Chief Meteorologist Stephen Cropper reported that a wind gust of 92 mph -- a Category 1 hurricane strength wind -- was recorded Wednesday night at County Airport.

High winds may have contributed to downed power lines throughout the area. As many as 8,600 Duquesne Light customers lost power by late Wednesday evening. Some of the hardest hit areas included Penn Hills, West Mifflin, McKeesport, White Oak, Dravosburg and Carnegie.

Fortunately we were not among those who lost power, though the lights flickered a few times, Looking out the window I don't see any trees down in our immediate vicinity either, unlike last fall when we got the remnants of that hurricane (was it Ike?) or, for that matter, last week, when we lost half a dozen trees down the street to the ice. But the noise from the wind was like a train coming through, waking me up several times. And I'm very glad it occurred to me to stop by the old house last night and stick the trash can in the garage.

The kids have a two-hour school delay, so I am working from home. Shortly I will have to get them up and ready to head out, but then I will enjoy a quiet day at home.
