Pennsic Land Grab this morning was going along fine.
Then, just as I had told
byronhaverford that I was going out to the parking lot to wait for the tractor to pick up
cellio's Pennsic house, a tractor arrived with the barony trailer. This was a surprise because a) it was only about 10 am, and we'd been told trailers wouldn't be moved until Land Grab was over (which it only just barely was), and b) no one had been by the barony trailer when they picked it up to confirm that it was the right one. Well, ok, it was delivered just fine, and this augured well... until I asked about the house, and was appalled when the tractor guy muttered that they had already *tried* to move it, but...
Turns out that they got it up and over the big hill in the parking lot, only to have the front wheel on the left side come off. Yes, the wheel, not the tire. Then the middle wheel lost its tire. At this point thay apparently realized there was a problem, and dragged it over to the side of the road. When I went up to look at it, the third wheel (it has three wheels on each side, and all of the problem ones were on the left) had also had its tire come loose.
Argh. In a panic, I called Brandubh, who said he'd be up as soon as he could.
Of course, by the time he arrived, just trolling in was taking an hour.
In the mean time I had tried to call several other camp members, and gotten through to one,
alaricmacconnal, who then spread the word to the rest of the camp. Eventually I reached
cellio, and other camp members trickled in, and we got a plan in place. Brandubh and
lorddegan (who had brought three replacement tires and a bunch of extra lug nuts) would see if they could fix the house's wheels, and in the mean time the rest of us would haul as much of the stuff we had stored in the house as we could over to the camp. A friend in the next camp over had a big truck (not a pickup, a *truck*) and said we could borrow it once she got it emptied, but that didn't happen today.
Well, short version, after getting some supplies off-site, Brandubh &
lorddegan were able to get the replacement wheels on, and around 7 pm B had us signed up with the tractor guys for tomorrow. So we cross our fingers that it works.
Then as we were setting up my tent, we had just gotten the roof up when it started to pour. Since the walls weren't up. my rugs got pretty wet. After the rain stopped, we put the rubber-backed ones up on tables to dry (we hope) and I took the wool one home with me. It is now in the dryer on low heat, where it will undoubtedly stay for the next several hours. Sigh.
And in case you were going to ask, yes, I still love Pennsic, but I am not the happiest camper right now. At least I am home, dry and warm. And thanks to
lorddegan for loaning me a dry t-shirt after the storm, or I think I would have frozen to death when we all went to Denny's for dinner.
I go back tomorrow morning, to stay. Hopefully we've used up all our bad luck for this war.
