Just Musing, but...

Reading an article on Jezebel brought this suggestion to my mind. I don't quite agree with it, but it made me think and I believe it'll make others think as well ( Read more... )

It seems like this would suffer in real world, practical applications. It's not difficult to penalize a woman for having an abortion - either she did or she didn't and that's pretty much the end of it. But to make it a legal imperative for a man to stay with a woman? I'm against that on so many levels ( ... )

I don't think she was implying they had to stay together as a unit- but that he was unavailable to leave her as a single mother. He would have to take half the child care duty- custody being a half/half situation.

That's a little more practical than the way I had interpreted it, but even still...a man who runs off is not going to make a good father. I feel sorry for the kid whose dad only spends time with him because he'll go to jail if he doesn't. I still maintain that raising a kid like that is really going to warp his views on love, family and affection, leading to the same sorts of problems if he ever decides to have a kid of his own.

I don't know, a good majority of kids I know with really bad parenting experiences are very deliberate about not wanting the same thing for their children.
I understand what you're saying. But is it much better for the mother that wants an abortion to be forced to keep her child? I think the whole idea was about keeping the ideology against abortion even. Given, I think pregnancy leads to great love with your child, but I think men feel that compelling love for their babies as well planned or not.

I agree with you for the most part... if you look at my initial response to Gail, you'll see that this whole idea of mine is pretty much just tongue-in-cheek at the Right's frothing at the mouth about abortion. I didn't address the technicalities about what it'd mean to "make" the father stay and how that would work out legally and actually because there's just so much to cover ( ... )
