I wanted to let those of you who know my room mate, he's back in the hospital. Last night when I got home from work, I found him laying on his bed, with labored breathing, unable to get up even with my help and not very coherent. After I couldn't get him up to take him into the ER, I called 911 and paramedics came to the house. His blood sugar was at 24!!! they gave him an IV to get his blood sugar back to normal, got him sitting up and much more responsive. Every one was in agreement that he was much better and didn't need to go into the hospital.
I got him up so I could get him to eat something to keep his blood sugar stabilized, but after an hour, he really wasn't doing any better and was having trouble just walking around. I took him to the ER at that point and they admitted him to the hospital in the wee hours of the morning. It turns out that he has a UTI that he thought was chemo side effects, and because he didn't get treated for it right away, he now has an infection in his blood. I forget the term for it, it starts with an S.
This morning they moved him to ICU where they have stabilized him, but it sounds like they will be keeping him there for a few days. Looking back, I'm so glad that I called 911 when I did, even though I know he's diabetic, it never even occurred to me to check his blood sugar. Durrr. I'm also glad that I bullied him into getting dressed and letting me help him walk out to my car so I could take him to the ER. I remember at one point thinking that perhaps I was over reacting and I should just let him sleep like he wants me to do.
I'll let you know more when I do. Please keep him in your thoughts.
