I've been working on possible backstories to hopefully play a Marauders Era Lupin one of these days (as I love him dearly), and stumbled upon this idea while talking with my sister. If this is an old and dead debate or discussion topic, forgive me. Also asking for forgiveness if someone's already stumbled upon this idea. It's new to me, so I'm sharing it with the only people I know who might appreciate it.

How James Could be Head Boy when Remus was the Prefect
a theory by Angi

Okay, so, the one and only theory I've ever heard (aside from 'Rowling messed up again') is that Head Boy and Girl are chosen not only from Prefects but also from Quidditch Captains, which is plausable since we know James was at least on the Quidditch team when he was at Hogwarts if not made Captain at some point.

But what if that's not the case. Then what?

Here's my idea.

According to my references (thank you Kira!) the incident where James had to save Snape's arse after Sirius tricked him into tracking down Moony happened in Sixth Year - sometime after Snape's Worst Memory but before James became Head Boy. I know this leaves a wide timespan, but I picture it happening near the middle of the term. Anyway, what if, in return for Snape's silence, he insisted someone with Lupin's condition should not be permitted to hold his position of power, or something like that? I don't normally try to delve into the mind of Severus Snape, but I figure when angry and just after a near death experience I would want to see some sort of punishment too, on all the Marauders. Dumbledore reluctantly agrees, just to keep Lupin safe. After all, his education is more important than keeping a silly old Prefect badge. Lupin is sadly stripped of his Prefectly status and, since there are only four boys in the dorm and Dumbledore must choose one of them, the badge is awarded to James, both in light of his recent heroics and the fact that he is better suited to possibly have some control over Sirius than Peter. That would make him eligible to be Head Boy during their Seventh Year.

And that's my theory. Comments on it?
