Oh, also, question. Is it hotlinking when. . .uhm, when it asks if you have a link to the image and you put the icon's url in the box when you're putting the icon on an account? [a-always thought it wasn't, since it was just putting the url in and it was like it would load the page, save the file to it's server, and that'd be it, but. . . .]

Yeah, that would be it. It`s always better to just upload it onto your own Photobucket or Tinypic account (or whatever other site you use). :3 Not really an expert on it, so I can`t really go into detail.

Wow, so I've been hotlinking since like. . .forever? orz But don't the urls for the pictures change since they're on LJ's server, so technically they wouldn't be directly dragging from the original image link except that first time? D: orz Sorry I'm asking so much(even after you said you're no expert). orz [feels bad now since she has 8377389 roleplay accounts and hotlinked all of their icons. Owes so many icon makers an apology that it isn't funny]

There's something that's called bandwidth that image hosting sites give you.
Now, this part I'm not too sure... whenever you post pictures onto websites, it takes a bit of that bandwidth. There's a limit to how much bandwidth you can have, so if a lot of people take that bandwidth, eventually it will be all taken up, and the image will break.
So, to get more bandwidth, you'll have to reupload all the images, or you create a new account or something.
Really sucky explanation, and I'm sure I got a lot of stuff wrong, but I hope it helped a little...? D:
(lol, don't worry, I didn't even know about all this stuff until I noticed the little bar on my account said 85% of bandwidth used up. Then I did some research xD).

Oh, I know that. It's just that I thought, if something was unhotlinked, it would clear up the taken bandwidth. D: So when I link to it, putting it in my icons, it'll take the bandwidth then no longer need it and it'll be replaced or something.
(I just sort of figured it out when I realized that the little green bar was getting further on in my photobucket after putting pictures in a few places. XD I put two and two together. Then again I've apparently always been computer smart.)

Hm, I'm not really sure. :<
Ergh, they should make a post about this kind of stuff somewhere on lj, giving answers to all this kind of stuff.
Well, they probably did. xD I should go search it up~
My little green bar has turned red now. D:
I'm not really worried about reuploading everything because I have all the stuff saved onto my computer and it isn't really all that much work. I'm more worried about people wondering where their icons went. xD

D: Seriously. XD Maybe they did. I wonder if there's a basic icon info community. . . . It'd probably be there.
Well, the icons themselves wouldn't disappear if your bandwidth exceeded--just, like, the ones here on your LJ. Because the link they're on is a different one than the one they were derived from. (Example: If I rightclick your icon and hit properties I'll get this as an "image location.":
http://l-userpic.livejournal.com/97497605/22832898
So it's not actually pulling it from wherever you uploaded it, it's on the LJ server instead. Which is why I thought linking it this way wasn't hotlinking....)

I think you are onto something here...
But if that were the case, lj would have to pay for a lot of bandwidth. xD
Whatever the case may be, I guess I'll keep on making more photobucket accounts once the bandwidth starts to rise up. xD
Reply
XD Well, yes, I think that's why you have to pay for more iconspace and stuff. I don't think linking that way is hotlinking, though--if it is it's momentary. [will try to do it less until she figures it out] Actually, maybe I should ask my brother--he's smarter computer-wise than I am, I think. . . .
XD Yes. Because no one has the money to pay for more bandwidth. And photobucket can't exactly stop you.

I don't even know anymore. xD Ah well. It would be nice to see what's going on~
Haha, I feel slightly guilty for taking advantage of photobucket. But what can I do? xP
