So, it figures that a show my sister was really into when it aired- 'The OC'-I really get into during college when it's in syndication, right? With the exception of a few shows (like Supernatural and Life With Derek) this is the way I've always watched shows. I really hate the whole hiatus thing. So to curb that I watch a lot of shows while they're in syndication or I break down and buy DVDs if I think they're worth it (it's how I got into Smallville and One Tree Hill :)).
Anyway, the reason I started this post was to talk about the EPICNESS that is the Seth/Ryan bromance. :)
I'm in the middle of rewatching season 1 and there's only one character I absolutely hate. And that would be Marissa Cooper, Ryan Atwood's girlfriend. The two of them meet outside the Cohen home and it's supposedly this really great, 'adult' moment for these two kids because Ryan's all 'James Dean' with a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, telling Marissa how he ended up at the Cohen's because he and his older brother stole a car. From that moment on we're supposed to believe that these two characters have this deep, unexplainable thing together? Yeah, sorry, I just never saw it.
On the flipside, Ryan stays in the Cohen pool house, wakes up in the morning, goes into the house and meets Seth. Seth is just sitting there in his pajamas playing video games. Their connection is immediate even if Ryan only utters monosylabic sentences, while Seth on the other hand can't shut up. They've bonded in a way that's scary at first for Seth's mom, Kirsten because she wants to protect her baby boy from getting hurt. But ultimately her husband, Sandy (and a few outside circumstances) convince her that maybe Ryan needs their family just as much as Seth needs Ryan's friendship. And from then on Seth and Ryan are nearly inseperable.
Enter Summer Roberts. Summer is the girl that Seth has had a crush on for ages, and sadly doesn't know his name, no matter how often he reminds her upfront. She does however take a liking to Ryan right away and would've started dating him I'm sure had Marissa not shown an interest in him. Because yeah, no matter how annoying and self-involved your best friend is, you don't steal a guy she's into. Even if she's also dating the captain of the water polo team at the time. Summer is just that great of a BFF, even if Marissa hardly reciprocates. Which is just awful. Poor Summer. Luckily she does eventually develop feelings for Seth. And after a few mistakes, misunderstandings and other love interests, they do end up together. :) Which personally I love because I think those two are just super adorable as a couple.
And yeah, I realize that doesn't have a whole lot to do with the Seth/Ryan bromance, but I'm getting there. ;) Ryan has helped Seth and given him all sorts of advice where Summer is concerned. While Summer on the other hand has proven time and again that she knows and understands Ryan in a way Marissa never really did, even though she's supposedly the girl he loves. Just more proof for me that even when Summer 'didn't' like Seth she really did because she was obviously paying attention to him, and listening when he told her stuff. See there's this one episode where pretty much the entire time Seth is talking to people about Summer even if he's dating Anna at the time. As much as he talks I like to think that once he was able to talk to Summer more freely all he would talk about was Ryan. That's my own personal fanon. And the only people he ever truly felt comfortable talking to about Ryan were his parents and Summer (okay, yes, Marissa too when cornered, but he really ends up hating her by the S1 finale--he's not the only one! Grr...). At least that's what I've gathered after seeing S1 a few times now.
So yeah, I guess with all this rambling my point is my slash pairing is without a doubt Seth/Ryan. :) My canon het ship is Seth/Summer. And um, my OT3 is Seth/Ryan/Summer. heh heh
