So, today I managed to wake up reasonably early, which considering what with packing etc. I still didn't get as early a night last night as I had intended, I finished off some packing, did my basic ablutions and considered breakfast. Some consultation with Sharon via messaging indicated that she wanted to try somewhere called Cumulus which had some good reviews and wasn't that long a walk away. So I did a little ingress while I waited for her to come down and then we walked along there. To find that it was not actually open on public holiday Monday. Maybe she'll try again tomorrow. We at least had got a fair amount of walking in and headed back to the café attached to the hotel, with just a bit of ingress type stuff on the way. We managed to get breakfast there and then I headed upstairs to finish packing.
I was a little later than I wanted to be but well within the checkout limit and I managed to sort that out and the storage of my luggage for the rest of the day and headed down to the convention. By that time there was only 20 minutes left for the 10am panels so I started a game of King of Tokyo with
arcadiagt5 and someone else, though I was down but not out by the time the next panel came along and someone else took over my cyberbunny. I wonder who ended up winning? I never found out.
I did attend the 'Doctor Who changed my life' panel and enjoyed that. Also discovered the existence of dalek beanies, may have to purchase or crochet for some people I know.
Then it was the Fantastic Food panel which had some foods inspired by various SF things, some historical, and the soylent. For those that haven't come across this it isn't people, it's a powder that can be rehydrated into a 'drink' that contains apparently all you need to live on. It isn't particularly nasty, in fact if anything it's a bit on the bland side, a bit like drinking pancake batter. But I didn't finish my sample and I don't think I could face living on it. Reminds me a bit too much of the extremely awful milkshakes they had in my primary school canteen, only in texture, but not a good association.
After that it was lunch time and we went to yet another dumpling place, which had been recommended to Sharon and had some tasty dumplings, and at least they didn't mix up the quantity with the dumpling order number (which had happened to some people on a prior evening at another venue). We managed to finish in good time and got back for the final actual panel of the convention, The Companions of Doctor Who (at least that was my pick). Then it was the closing ceremony, with (eventually) some slides and introduction of the next year's convention. Yes. I have got a membership. It doesn't clash with classes, it might with exams, but I'll just have to specify that those dates aren't good for me next year when requesting the exam.
After the convention was finished, raffle prizes given (I didn't enter since I had no way to get that much stuff home with me if I had won) and people thanked there was a post-convention gathering in the hotel bar where there were some drinks drunk, conversations had, and photos taken. And I now have some fruit since Sharon had some left over so I will be having that as a snack as soon as I've finished this.
I yet again failed to correctly note the closing time of Haighs so I have no chocolate coming back, but it's probably just as well considering I have eaten far more than I have walked it off this convention. On the positive side I actually (for now) feel reasonably well. My stomach is feeling much happier and so far I don't have a respiratory illness, though with another plane ride to come and incubation periods it may be too early to tell here. But I might get back to the gym this week.
So I did another mission instead of chocolate, I tried another but fielding would have taken too much time so I decided to leave that one for this year. Next year, maybe. And I'm on a new Ingress mission. This one involves hacking portals at Melbourne airport and at Perth airport, so I've done the Melbourne ones and will do the Perth ones when I get there. Hopefully I can fit that in before my baggage comes through. I'm all checked in at Melbourne and through security so I've got this basically done so the 750 bit is definitely done, and will fill any further details later. For now some snacks and finding my gate.
