“Fever’s too high, Dean,” Sam frowns, glancing down at his brother before his eyes flicker worriedly back to the thermometer.
Dean just sniffles and looks up at him in confusion. The pink flush on his cheeks stands out against the sweat-soaked sheets tucked around him, and Sam sighs.
He only turns around for a second, just to put the thermometer away and get some more Tylenol, but when he turns back around Dean is on his feet, eyes determined as he starts for the door. Part of the sheets is still wrapped around him, keeping him from really going anywhere, but that doesn’t stop him from trying. Sam catches Dean by the armpits as he tries to take a step and nearly falls flat on his face.
Dean’s skin is hot against Sam’s, flushed and too dry. He buries his face into Sam’s neck and murmurs something incoherent, his chapped lips ghosting over Sam’s skin.
“Dean, where are you going?” Sam asks, maneuvering his brother back under the covers. Dean’s eyes are still on the door. He swallows hard, drags his gaze up to meet Sam’s with a shaky inhale.
“Sammy.”
“I’m right here, Dean-”
“H-he’s out there,” Dean continues. “I let him- I was supposed to be watching Sammy.”
Sam’s eyes widen in realization.
“Sammy is fine, Dean.” Sam smoothes his hand over the sheets, slides his fingers through Dean’s hair. “You just go back to sleep, okay?” He holds his breath while Dean seems to contemplate this. Finally, Dean nods and struggles onto his side, shivering and clutching at the sheets.
“’M cold,” he whispers through chattering teeth, and Sam rolls his eyes because he knows what’s coming next. Without waiting for Dean to ask, he crawls onto the bed and settles himself behind Dean, wrapping his long arms around him.
“Y’feel good,” Dean murmurs contentedly. Sam tightens his embrace and presses his lips to Dean’s temple.
“Get some sleep.”
“He can’t do that,” Dean suddenly blurts, jolting upright. He looks around the room wildly, and Sam reaches for his shoulder.
“Dean, its okay-”
“I’m supposed to hold his hand when he crosses the street. He can’t cross it by himself.” Dean voice is frantic, but his movements are sluggish due to the fever. He looks at Sam, his expression pleading. “I have to help Sammy.”
“Hey, Sammy’s gonna be fine, Dean.”
Sam gently tugs at Dean’s shoulder, tries to get him to lie back down, but Dean shakes his head.
“I’ve told him a million times, but what if he tries to cross the street without me holding his hand?” Dean closes his eyes as a shiver wracks his body.
“Hey,” Sam says firmly. “I promise you. Sammy is okay.”
Dean stills, opens his eyes, then slumps against Sam in exhaustion.
“He is?”
“You want to know why?” Sam cups Dean’s chin in his hand, brushes his thumb over Dean’s lips. “Because you’re a good big brother.”
“I am?”
“The best.”
Dean nods, fully trusting, and allows Sam to pull the blankets up over him once again.
“You’re the best big brother,” Sam says, smiling at how cheesy it sounds, but it seems to placate Dean. He wiggles in closer to Sam, shivers, and falls asleep within minutes.
