The US is having a Spirit Day today and I've taken it for myself. The idea is to wear purple as a symbol against bullying and pro tolerance and respect to others, even when they don't follow our ideals. It's a day pro LGTB community and all that.
I'm doing it because it's sad that so many teens are killing themselves. This past Sunday, Juan José, nephew of an old friend of my aunt's killed himself. Juan José was only 17 and the son of an idiotic moron who thought he could be an intolerant bastard with his oldest daughter and son. Juan José couldn't handle the pressure anymore and hanged himself. My family attended the funeral and his dad spoke to other parents asking them not to be so "strict" with their children. Too bad it was too late.
Today, for me, is Spirit Day even though I'm in Colombia and Medellín, my city, has been very tolerant to difference in many ways. We still have a long way to go before becoming what we should. Our kids are still being bullied and stigmatised for not being what others want them to be. Our kids are still killing themselves and each other.
So, yeah, I'm wearing purple.
