I read Wanted, finally. I am always late to the party on stuff, and yeah, I was influenced by the fact that a movie is coming out. I understood prior to reading it that there are only one or two pieces of the original that made it into the movie, aside from the title and maybe some basic outline of the idea of the thing.
I don't know how to describe things like this. It was ok... It was mostly a decent read, I thought the art worked fine, etc., I didn't like it, though. It is too dark for me. I don't have to like it to think it worked, and I guess it worked, and like I said, it was ok, but I don't LIKE it, and I don't really want to.
The idea of a world where supervillains rule is fine with me. The idea that there is this cartel that keeps things running smoothly and covers everything up, etc. is good enough. The idea behind Wesley and his rebirth as his father's successor and supervillain is ok. I guess I would like this more if I didn't find elements of it unnecessarily over the top.
I am not personally a big fan of certain things used for the sole purpose of showing us how bad someone is, or how edgy and dark your writing is, etc. I am not a big fan of rape, but rape seems to be like sudoku to the people in this world. It's what they do when they need to kill time in between doing other stuff. It's all by reference, but still. Bestiality also gets a funny enough nod, but I'm not sure it all needed to be that way. I think that people use a lot of easy ways out in writing, and writing badass and over the top and such instead of writing artfully or intelligently is one of them. Had it been just a bit different than it was I would probably be raving about it.
One thing it has going against it is that I just finished (re)reading Astro City Life in the Big City and Tarnished Angel. These are masterful and good. Well done, full of character development, etc. The first one is a collection of stories, and the second is a single work, focusing on a super-villain fresh out of prison trying to do right. Not every story needs to be a good upbeat one, but I think the difference in the quality of story telling between these two different worlds populated by super-folks is pretty glaring.
I like Millar, and have liked plenty of his stuff. I liked Ultimates 1&2 a lot, and his ultimate FF, etc.
I want to see the movie. I sort of want to see it based on the promise that it ISN'T like the comic. I like the casting, I like the trailers, etc. I want to see Hancock more than Wanted... but I want to see it anyway.
