A haggardly bum looking guy in a bookstore started arguing about with me about how chess was more complicated than go. His first argument went along the lines of "look at how many people play it over here... i don't see anyone playing go... because chess is a more complicated game" and then he moved onto "well in chess, you're trying to capture pieces, and you're moving pieces on a board. it's complicated. in go you're just trying to score more points, so it's simpler"
I counter-argued about combinatorics, and the level of go-playing-computers versus chess-playing-computers..... but i got a little bit bored, and a little bit scared that he was going to follow me around until i gave him money, or something...
I've probably played about 30 games of go in my lifetime and probably about 50 games of chess. I've lost every game of Go, except for two games when I was teaching someone else to play. This makes me a little upset because I put a lot of effort into it when I play, and I try to apply logic and think ahead, but I always lose sooooo badly! Something about the logic in the game is completely foreign to me.
On the other side of the coin there are a lot of games I make REALLY FAST progress at without trying very hard - so i'm not trying to complain here! But it's very weird how I can play so many 100s of board games and puzzle games and logic puzzles over the years (it's practically my job!) only to find this one board game which I'm still playing at like a 6-year-old's level. Like pouring cold water on a sponge for 25 years, and then turning it over to find a dry spot!
