(no subject)

I knock lightly on the door, despite being aware of the sound of two people upstairs. There’s always the possibility, in a college student house like this, that you’ll find a random person where you thought you were alone. You’re supposed to treat such occurrences by pretending to be indifferent, but nobody really is.

The room seems to be empty.

I quickly enter and shut the door behind me, though I doubt anybody will be downstairs for a while. The breathy whimpers amplified through the ancient vents in this house tell me that things are barely started upstairs. But I’m acting as if I don’t care.

The password on his computer hasn’t changed.

I quickly scroll through his music files and shake my head. This kid’s ability to choose music hit a brick wall somewhere in elementary school. I quickly pull a USB from my pocket and transfer a music file to his computer. I change the file name to something that blends into his music list, then quickly erase all evidence that I was there and leave.

The dissonant music of two human bodies is giving me a headache. He’s assumed all his guests are gone or passed out by now.

I quietly slip out the door and meet the cold slap of a lingering winter wind. I’ve dressed in optimism for the coming summer, and the buses won’t be running for another hour, but I would rather walk the 24 blocks back home in my ripped t-shirt, than have to listen to the noises he makes for that guy.

That other guy.
