The question has gone back and forth as to which event is indeed older. Wind Masters folks of course claim Ymir is older and Caer Mearians Claim that indeed Gem Joust is older.
What is not in doubt is when the first ymir was held.
The First Ymir was held 21 Feb 1976. As an interesting side note it was not the first event held by the group, the first event was "Feast of the Lusty Month" held in may of 75
Another fact is Gem Jousts change the gem every 12 years. First it was Diamond, then Emerald and currently Sapphire. knowing that the event changes every 12 years, I went back into court records to settle our debate. For those of you who don’t know what I mean The Atlantian Order Of Precedence or OP (
http://op.atlantia.sca.org/) lists each king, and what awards were given at what court. unfortunately the awards are not sorted by event (only by date) prior to Michael II and Carissa II in 1983, for our purposes here today it doesn’t matter.
Caer Mearians put forward that the first Diamond Joust was held in July or 1975, and supported in this claim by the Tir-y-don web site (
http://www.tirydon.org/gallery/default.aspx)
one would think this is now an open and shut case July of 75 did happen before Feb. of 76. If I may allow me to draw your eyes to the summer of 1987. If we cast our eyes at the color coordinated, numbered chart. with the circles and arrows and the paragraph on the side explaining what each one is ( to be used as evidence) we see the end of the debate. in the previous year Badouin & Caterina who ruled that year under the the names Tsuneo I and Nyan-Nyan I DID attend a Diamond Joust in the Barony of Caer Mear his Grace Duke Gyrth Oldcastle of Ravenspur received his Sea Stag that day. (
http://op.atlantia.sca.org/op_event.php?event_id=838) if Diamond joust was indeed first held in July of 1975 then that would have been the 12th and final diamond Joust. which means either:
Gem Joust did not happen the following year in 1987 (note there are 12 Emerald Joust) and we are all looking forward to Sapphire Joust X this year. and Ymir is the longest running event in the kingdom.
OR
Gem joust in fact DID happen in 1987 and the king Olaf III and Judith I did not attend. Which would make the 1987 Gem Joust the 12 diamond joust, which would put the first diamond joust in July of 76 rather than 75 and meaning that Ymir is the longest running event in the kingdom.
